Julian McMahon's interpretation of Doctor Doom seemed really lame. His voice seemed almost squeaky and he didn't have personal dominance one expects from a character with doom’s power and depth. To me, Doctor Doom was Darth Vader before Darth Vader. He should enter a room and scare the willies out of everyone with his physical presence, arrogance and charisma. I explained this to my wife and she agreed. She also started calling him, "Victor Von Darn".

I agree. Doom in the movie wouldn't scare a 2 year old. That goes back to the writing and Directing. Which in this instance dropped the ball. Hopefully they will correct that in the sequel.

Doom wasn't even in FF1 it was like the pre-doom. Everyone wants Victor to transform into Doom in a 2 hour movie, have full use of his powers, be the leader of a country, and have all these doombots. The origins are out of the way. I"m starting to wonder now if Doom will be more of the focus of FF3 now fighting SS and Galactus. I'm curious how they're gonna make it work.

Actually, I'm rereading the Fantastic Four this summer. Doom was introduced in issue five, which I feel was the first FF to have the Lee/Kirby formula down pat.
Doom came on like gangbusters, trapping the FF in the Baxter Building, kidnapping Sue, using a time machine and just plain trying to take over the world. That was my first impression of Doom. This guy is BAD!
I remeber when origins were an afterthought in comics. Doctor Strange didn't have his origin told until after a few adventures and then it was by popular demand.

Have you read Books of Doom though? Doom wasn't born with steel diapers ya know... he grew into his Doom-ness. The movie version was certainly watered down, I will grant you that. Show me a comic book where Victor is a CEO before becoming Doom. His transformation occurs at a much earlier stage in life (college age), then he goes off to brood in Eastern Europe for a while before going to Tibet for an indeterminate amount of time.

I think both Victor and Reed's parts suffered due to the writer's focus being mostly on Johnny and Ben. I think it is wrong to judge the actor by the deficiencies in the script. It just wasn't on the page IMO. After all, Julian has gotten much better critical notice from Nip/Tuck and it fact did a very dark turn in an S & M encounter with a patient. If Doom could have been written like that, you would see a difference. Additionally, I really don't think Tim Story is a director that has proven that he can handle drama very well. His best scene was probably the one where Doom (Julian) is backlit and is mostly in shadow when he entices Ben to go into the transformation chamber.
