So I play the Magic tcg. Something that sets it apart is that each set of cards is based on a world with its own races, storyline etc. The most famous storyline, spanning I believe 12 books, is Urza versus the Phyrexians.
I believe that, given a good enough budget, a Magic film could be the next big fantasy movie after The Hobbit. The best novel to adapt would be either The Brothers' War, or The Gathering Dark.
The Brothers' War involves Urza and Mishra, brothers who travel to the desert to study under a master artificer. They discover a cavern with relics from the long-dead Thran. Among the old artifacts/machines/constructs are a pair of powerstones. Each brother wants them for study. They each end up taking one stone and split on bad terms.
Later the brothers come into conflict when the leader of the desert bandits Mishra fell in with assassinates a king that Urza served. They begin building armies of artifacts and machines. At the climax, Urza uses an artifact known as the Sylex, which wipes out Mishra's armies, sinks the continent in which the war took place, and brings about a 500 year ice age.
The twist is that by the end of the novel, Mishra wasn't really himself. He began accepting help from Priests of Gix (Gix being a demon from Phyrexia). Slowly they compleated him, replacing flesh and organs with machinery. When he had the final battle against Urza, he was merely human skin stretched tight over a Phyrexianized creation.
A subplot in the novel involves a college allied to Urza's side studying the phenomenon of magic, using the energy or mana of the world. In essence, the rediscovery of magic and spellcasting that was lost after the fall of the Thran.
The Gathering Dark takes place within the ice age Urza caused. Its protagonist, Jodah, comes into contention with the Church of Tal. The Church is persecuting mages on the charge that they were responsible for the Ice Age. He finds a safe haven at a mages' conclave where magic is used wantonly and in whatever way the wizard or sorceror wishes.
There he learns that the current headmaster deposed the old one, locking him in a cage over a pit leading to the hellish plane of Phyrexia. The caged headmaster contacts Jodah and persuades him to embark on a quest to free him from his captivity.
Aesthetically you'd get elves, goblins, dragons, merfolk, zombies along with magitek: airships, power-suits with mana-powered firepower (magic "ray guns"), a healthy doses of body horror from the Phyrexians.
I'll post some artwork showing some of these things, if anyone is interested.
