Intelligent design is not a decent alternative to evolution because it has yet to be proven. All it is supported by is philosophical arguments. And if students are to be forced into learning intelligent design in school, then why aren't they expected to learn other cultural and religious beliefs on the subject? Unfortunately, religion keeps trying to intervene in the institutions our government swore to protect 230 years ago.
