don't expect a smart, well-educated, well-organized, mature, Rotten Tomato review from a site like AICN....

They are mostly known for fan boy reviews, and a lot of their reviews contain swearing, bad grammer...etc....

I don't trust reviews from people who don't run the website. AICN typically posts reviews that may or may not be real. Whether I agree or disagree with them I usually enjoy reading the reviews of Harry Knolwes, Moriarty, and Massawyrm. At least I know their reviews aren't fake.

Seems to me he put together a fake review based around the claims that the chick from the IMDB forums said when she leaked all that info about seeing a rough draft of the film.

If they make a Silver Surfer movie, they didnt want to spoil Galactus in FF4:2. that was said in interviews and such, so they tease us with the shadow of his helmet and saying he's "inside the cloud". Still, it would have made the movie less disappointing I think in everyones eyes.

But back to the topic at hand. If they've taken away the more fantastical elements of the cartoon, you can bet they're taking away shenrons physical characteristics. This is Fox after all, they don't think people can extend their minds while watching films to believe more imaginary things such as talking dragons, so they do it for us by hiding it behind smoke and clouds and what not. It's insulting to everyone who comes to watch these movies to see exactly what they wont show us. Which is giant talking dragons, giant mutant murdering sentinels, purple World devouring beings with silly hats. but hey, wearwolves and vampires are cool with them. hence piccolo's look and what may be goku's oozuroo.

If it was called something else, and the character names were different. Then yes, it would probably be passable. But carying the name of Dragonball this movie is seriously falling flat on so many levels. Story, Design, Casting, etc. I'm sure the action sequences will be entertaining, and i have hopes for the sound design and score. But again, to fans it probably wont hold up when compared. This movie is standing in its own way. Change the name to something like "Journey of a hero" and change Goku's name to Jason, then no one would complain as much. As it would be influenced by Dragonball as apposed to being a live action representation.

I suppose it sounds better than I expected, but still not great. I don't understand what the deal is with Fox and things like Shenron, Galactus, and Sentinels. Do they seriously not understand that this is the kind of stuff people really want to see? And not just fans--the general audience, too. It's not even debatable. A Shenron appearance--a real appearance, handled by capable filmmakers, not this nerfed behind-the-clouds Shenron--would be something to behold. The potential for true artistry in such a scene would be staggering. Very disappointing. The DragonBall franchise is weak in many aspects--mainly storytelling ones--but can be incredibly strong visually, and it needs that advantage. Nerfing the visuals will not serve the film; they should be enhanced, not diluted.
