what I don't understand is why use Max as a villain when throughout his history, he's always been the good guy? Is it because they didn't want to use a character that's too well known, and wanted a 'throw away megalomaniac'?
I don't get it either, and I suspect that it's really because the WB has no ideas.
The first Spider-Man used the #1 Spidey villain, Norman Osborn. They had an updated origin story, and elements from The Death of Gwen Stacy.
X2 had Magneto, and was based on God Loves, Man Kills.
Batman Begins didn't use the Joker, but Batman is a different case because he already had a movie franchise and it was still early enough for the general audience to understand that this was a full reboot. Yes, 16 years passed between Batman (1989) and BB, and people were still thinking that it was the same continuity. That's why I think the apologist argument that people won't care if JLA is in the same continuity as BB is nonsense. Nontheless, BB was based on Year One and wisely promised Joker for the sequel.
These pretty much considered to be three of the standout films in the recent superhero movie craze. They had classic villains, and were based on classic stories.
Now why the hell is the WB using Maxwell Lord, a non-evil supporting character, who was only retconned into being a villain two years ago, as it's big bad? That's lame.
