‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Franchise To Expand With Launch Of Nickelodeon’s Avatar Studios, Animated Theatrical Film In The Works

The Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise is set to get even bigger.

Nickelodeon is launching Avatar Studios, a division designed to create original content spanning animated series and movies based on the franchise’s world.

The original creators and executive producers Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will run the studio as co-chief creative officers, reporting to Ramsey Naito, President, Nickelodeon Animation.

Avatar Studios will produce content for platforms including Paramount+ and Nickelodeon as well as third-party platforms and theatrical releases.


The first project is an animated theatrical film that is set to start production later this year.

Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, which follows the adventures of the main protagonist Aang and his friends, who must save the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation, aired for three seasons between 2005 and 2008.

Time to animate the Kyoshi books. And kill the Netflix abominiation.

"You guys want your own studio? YOU GOT IT!" Nick is ALL too happy to get more Avatar content back out. Now, Mike and Bryan got creative control of the property again. This is a big middle finger to Netflix and this makes them look bad. They really screwed up.

Besides that drama, I'm excited! This has the potential to be HUGE! Avatar's popularity is at an apex right now, this is the perfect time to do this.

Nah, this is 100% Paramount looking at the numbers Avatar and Korra get on Netflix and saying, we need this for our own streaming network. Or, more accruately, our newest branding of our streaming network.

The live action show is likely still going forward, given the contracts.

I May be wrong, but I was under the impression that during the last Korra season Nick was trying to get rid of the whole franchise?

I cannot possibly see why, the Avatar franchise is the biggest thing Nick’s had since Spongebob these past two decades.

I seem to remember that they sorta rushed out the last episodes, like 2 episodes at a time and not even giving them airtime but releasing them digitally instead. And that this would be because they were "finished" with the franchise and wanted to move on to other things. Something like that.

I'm very excited to see where they go here. Sequel stories to TLA and Korra would be great, and of course adapting the Kyoshi books. The possibilities are huge!

A problem that has plagued a lot of the kid oriented channels like Nick and Cartoon Network is that, even if a show is good and is doing well, it might not be attracting the audience that the channel wants. I don't know how much you actually remember of the last season of Korra, but it essentially got put onto streaming (which let me tell you, Nicks streaming app was hot bull****). I do think it did air, but it aired in the middle of the night. There was also the slight controversy of the clip show episode, which they did because of a sudden budget cut, and they did that episode so they could pay the crew.

A post-TLOK movie seems to be where this is headed, at least I hope so. Maybe an older Korra or the next in the cycle (Earth).

They put the last two episodes on streaming cause of Korra and asami. That’s what I heard.

I looked it up. It was the last 5 episodes of Season 3 that it moved to online only for a bit. It eventually began airing on Nicktoons, but the main channel was done with it. Which, given the violence in the end of Season 3, kind of see where the Nick execs balked. Season 4 essentially premiered online on Friday, with an airing on Nicktoons on Sun. I was trying to remember the schedule, because I remembering watching it on TV after online to see if there were any edits.

Korra had a very rough season two. I dont know if i could ever call it awful, but it had a big pacing problem in season 2 and a very uninteresting plot. I felt they got back on track in season 3 and ended with a bang in season 4. The show’s climax was so incredibly riveting.

I will admit, I am protective of Korra because it was directly the cause of a big change in my life and changing a path I was heading toward. Its not perfect, but neither was Avatar. But when it was good, it was very good. And it got dark in a way that didn't make it feel like a separate product.

I am the first to criticize Korra. But it is really hard for me to imagine anyone watching it to the end, and calling it awful. Especially the third season, which I'd argue is right up there with season 2 and 3 of Avatar.

Though I do find a fun bit of irony of saying the TA kids are more interesting then Korra, when Aang is arguably the least interesting character in Avatar, and Aang's my favorite. Korra has far more layers to her then my boy Aang ever did. But alas, I also know that a lot of people don't seem interested in the trials and tribulations of a young woman for some reason.
