Academy Award nominations

The Fountain, man...as much as we hate to own up to it, a lot of people, even the artsy fartsy Oscar committee, didn't get it.

Glad to see Pan's Labyrinth get the nod for something.

Not only did it get nominated for foreign language film but...
original screenplay
cinematography
original score
art direction
and make-up.

:wow: 6 nominations! that's a lot!

Well, anyway, this is a superhero forum. So...Superman Returns vs. Pirates for Visual Effects. I think Pirates is the clear winner.

Wow. That Best Picture Nom snub for Dreamgirls is a friggin' crime.

Leo was only nominated for "Blood Diamond" not for both films

The academy is certainly going out of their way to screw him, wouldn't you say? Not only do they nominate only one of his performances...they snub his better of the two.

Also, where the hell is Affleck and Nicholson for best supporting?

Also, when the hell is the Academy going to learn comedy is much harder than being dramatic. Sasha Baron COhen should've got a best actor nomination in this year of disappointments.

Or maybe they just didn't like it. I got the movie just fine...I just didn't care for it.

Ok, why was Baron Cohen snubbed? Borat is the funniest film in years. To give him an adapted screenplay nomination is ridiculous being as it was 80 % improv. Improv+Comedy that actually works = the most challenging thing an actor can do. He should've gotten the nomination.

BEST PICTURE: The Departed

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN DIRECTING: Letters from Iwo Jima

- First American director, I believe, to show the other side of the war. That's impressive and 'daring'. Matching Flags and Letters as 'one' film on two sides. Also, Japan schools aren't taught the losses in the war like we are here. So, there's actually never been a movie about it (to my knowledge) over there as well...

BEST SCREENPLAY: Pan's Labyrinth

BEST SCREENPLAY: The Departed/ Children of Men

BEST ART DIRECTION: Pan's Labyrinth

MUSIC: Pan's Labyrinth (that humming theme is still in my head)

BEST MAKEUP: Pan's Labyrinth (Fawn & Eye monster vs. Adam's fat suit and natives... not a tought decission)

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN VISUAL EFFECTS: POTC2 (even though I absolutely hated the film. The effects of Davy Jones makes this sinking ship a winner)

BEST FOREIGN FILM: Pan's Labyrinth (hands down, easiest choice yet...)

The screenplay nomination surprised me- for that reason... what screenplay? The majority of it was improv and cutting scenes together.

It seems to me a lot of the academy probably wanted to give Baron Cohen an actor nod but the more prudish, snobbish side could not allow that, so they just gave him a pity screenplay which really makes no sense.

Yeah, that is surprising- especially given the fact that Nicholson would probably win hands down. He created one of the most memorable characters of the year!- in my opinion.

May have even been a 'shoe-in' for best supporting.

Peter O' Toole better have been something special if his performance was supposedly far more superior to Cohen's.

I am a little bumbed Children of Men got snub in favor of the very good but very overrated Little Miss Sunshine, whatever, Children of men will be the best picture to me

go Mark Whalberg!

Cohens portrayal was good for a comedian but people cant actually think it was on the level of these performances.

Leonardo DiCaprio – BLOOD DIAMOND/THE DEPARTED
Ryan Gosling – HALF NELSON
Peter O’Toole – VENUS
Will Smith – THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS
Forest Whitaker – THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND

:whatever:
Now the Nicholson snub I can understand being riled up over.

screw Eastwood.... Martin deserves the oscar... how many great films has this man made... and he is always snubbed.... he needs to get one... Eastwood already has a mantle full of oscars.... and it gets old to keep on awarding the same man... doin't get me wrong... he's a great talent and deserves the nod for his two film war epic.... but after being snubbed for Raging Bull, Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, and the Aviatar

Well, I agree he has been snubbed, but one of the big problems with the Academy is that they won't award truly deserving efforts, but later on will award "pity" awards. Sounds like what you're proposing (or supporting).

Even if Leo was nominated twice for "Blood Diamond" and "The Departed", he doesn't have much of a chance against Forrest Whitaker. IMO, DiCaprio's performance in "Blood Diamond" is superior to his performance in "The Departed" (although he did a great job in Departed).

POTC2 has to win for best visual effects. Davy Jones was so convincing!

I think "Listen" should win for best song and no I'm not just saying that because of Beyonce. Hudson's a better singer, but "Listen" was just powerful.

Comedy is far harder than drama. Especially with the high level of improv used for Borat.

No.. not at all... Martin deserves it... I feel the Departed was a better film then Iwo Jima... and he deserves to be recongnized...

Walhberg was the **** in the departed.... best supporting role of the year by far
