They've been getting better and better each time for me. Not an Avengers comicbook fan (yet) but Avengers 1 is at the bottom of my list. I liked the sequel a lot more. Have yet to watch Endgame.
P.S. I watch movies when the hype goes down. Right now I don't wanna risk walking into a mass shooting during the opening weekend of the biggest blockbuster of the year!
If we consider Civil War an Avengers film it's clearly the best in terms of pacing, character and drama - one of the most complete and best of all MCU films.
Taking CW out of the equation then IMO its:
1. Endgame, after a second viewing I have bumped it up to number one,
In both viewings I really loves the first Act, a very strong opening indeed.
First time around I felt that the second act was a bit all over the place. On my second viewing I enjoyed it a lot more and appreciated the character interactions better.
The final showdown has pretty much every MCU character and massive stakes although it doesn't juggle the hero moments quite as well as Infinity War- with the exception of Wanda and I admit that Cap fighting Thanos one on one with Mjolnir and his shield is worth going to see the film for all by itself.
Thanos isn't quite as nuanced a villain in this one although as a physical menace he's even more of a beast than in IW and his fight scenes are impressive.
I understand that this movie is the MCU's Return of the King, but somehow ROTK did a slightly better juggling act and had better pacing overall but Endgame is still an extremely satisfying conclusion.
2.. Infinity War: a superb effort of juggling all the Avengers, the most dramatic action sequences and arguably the best villain in any MCU film ( except maybe Hela). Plus it seamlessly integrates Spider Man, Black Panther, GOTG and Dr Strange - all in all a very impressive achievement.
2. Age of Ultron. TBH while nor perfect I feel it's actually better than the first film because the first and third acts are better paced, it does more with the characters and Hulk v Hulk buster is still simply awesome.
I loved the fact that the Avengers faced their first real defeat and had to regroup at Clint's farm. To me that worked.
It needed about 10-15 chopped off ( maybe the entire NK sequence ?) and Ultron himself is not as menacing or crazy as he could have been - some of his nastiest stuff happened off screen and that's not good storytelling for a cbm.
Really this movie's main fault is it tries to squeeze too much in.
4. The Avengers. Okay I accept that I'm the only person in the world who doesn't go nuts about this film but it's 1st and 2nd acts wander around and there's a lot of standing around on the helicarrier. The third act is pretty impressive for any cbm although the one moment that was a bit jarring was Nat jumping onto a speeding alien flying bike by grabbing it with one arm. While I have no problem with Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and even Cap doing stuff like that because of their superhuman powers/tech as a mere human Nat's arm would have been ripped off - I note that in future films they don't have her do as much blatantly impossible stuff, or they're more subtle about it.
Anyway the 3rd act is a real triumph and more than makes up for the rest of the film. But, all in all IMO Avengers is the weakest film of the series - which is like saying 2 towers is the weakest film in LOTR, it's still head and shoulders above almost every other cbm.
1. Avengers , A
2. Avengers Infinity War, A
3. Avengers Endgame , A-
4. Avengers Age of Ultron , B-
Rankings aside, I consider Avengers Endgame to be amoung the most important CBM in the last 40 years or so since we've had them on the big screen, not counting serials and other adaptations in the 40s through 60s and animated films.
Here's my list of most important milestones. Important doesn't always mean the best, but the most important historically for the genre...so far.
Superman 1978
Batman 1989
X Men 1999
Spiderman 2002
The Dark Knight 2008
Iron Man 2008 Avengers 2012
Wonder Woman 2017
Black Panther 2018 Avengers Infinity War 2018
Avengers Endgame 2019
