Lots of kids at my school make fun of kids for collecting comics. Is there an age where you should get too mature for comics?

I'm 42. When I reach that age, I'll let you know.

Seriously though, don't let others dictate what you enjoy, whatever it is.

Well those kids are probably into anime/manga? So it's west vs. east side! :p Really just enjoy what floats your boat. I mean some adults like children cartoon that are really really just for 2-3 year olds with no real depth or plots like the BTAS and Batman: the Brave and Bold have.

I'm 24 years old. You don't let people tell you to stop what you enjoy doing.

Unless what you enjoy is Laverne and Shirley re-runs.......because we have to draw the line somewhere.....

Part of growing up is giving up everything that makes you happy. :awesome:

No, not at all. Most mainstream comics (Read: Marvel Universe and DC Universe cannon) are meant to be read by teenagers and up. Both also have series, both part of and separate from the cannon, meant for 13 and under and 18 and over. And there's a whole market for comics made specifically for adults that's been around since the 60s, it's just never been very close to the mainstream until very recently. Even if you reach a phase where you feel you've outgrown Spider-Man (which I hope you don't, because I still love the old Lee/Ditko stuff myself), there's plenty of comics, some mainstream but mostly off the beaten path, that are totally suitable for adults. People may make fun of you, but those people are jerks. Honestly, you're going to run into a lot of people, especially at school, who are mean and judgmental for no reason. A lot of the have ideas about how the world works and how people should behave that are completely baseless. There are plenty of reasons for it, enough to have a very long discussion about, but the jist of it is that a lot of kids aren't in a position where it's easy to be understanding and open minded, so they tend to lash out. Ignore them if you can, avoid them if you can, and hell, maybe try showing them some of your favorite mags (again, if you can). Might broaden their horizons a bit. I know it sounds like a bit of a cliche, but it's a cliche because it's honestly good advice. Don't bother socializing with closed minded people who enjoy being mean. Stick with your real friends, not just people you can have a good time with, not just people who are cool, but decent people you can form a connection with, and don't bother with the mean people. If they try to give you trouble, just walk away. They don't have any power over people if no one takes them seriously. Just don't be mean to them back. Be nice to them if you have to interact with them at all. And just enjoy your comics. 'Cause, guess what, comics are awesome. Some of the best stories in the last 100 years have been told in comics, and it's good to be a part of that. Plus, they're fun. :o

I've very open about my comics and buying comics and stuff like that.

I haven't met a single complainer yet.

Well, they do have an advantage when it comes to perfecting their stroke. Reading always comes at the cost of jerking-off time:csad:

It's funny when I was in high school and I was reading a comic I would kind of hide it so no one could see what I was reading and make fun of me. Other then the few friends I had that read comics at the time people would make fun of it. But once I grew up and starting working I didn't care what people thought (about comics and pretty much everything else) and would read my comics on lunch or break in front of people and not care and holy crap it seems like everyone I know reads or has read comics and really enjoys them. It was shocking really. I'm thinking comics become more culturally acceptable when you're older. Plus nowadays we get movies like Spider-Man and Dark Knight and that doesn't hurt the cause either.

It's hard to knock comic books when the movies OWNED the box office for the entire past decade. Even the crappy ones made a ton of $$$ in theaters and DVD sales. Anyone that knocks comics has seen a comic movie at least once, so that just makes them a ruh-tard.

My boss had that perception that comics were for kids and when he took his 4 year old son into my comic book store and talked about me he found out that I was the youngest regular customer there. I'm 21 by the way.

My sister is the same way but I constantly put her down by simply telling her that the average age of comic book collectors are people in their 20s and 30s.

In high school I was an open comic fan and a "cool" kid. Nobody really gave me ****, probably because I'm 6'2, 300lbs and can bench 440 lbs and im pretty f***ing funny.

I'm 52....still buy and read them when I can....see no reason to stop at any age if you still like them.

Come up with stuff that you can make fun of those kids for. It doesn't even have to be bad. Like just find out a TV show they watch, and then the next time you see them go like "Oh my god, you watch __________?" and then roll your eyes at them.

If they ask what's wrong with watching __________ just say "oh man, the baby doesn't know what's wrong with _________."

Practice the style a bit and you can do it with anything. Clothes, shoes, hair, facial features, whatever!

I would not advocate this idea. Insulting them back and not explaining why only generates a more hostile environment.

The thing is, it doesn't seem like kids read comics. It seems actually the youngest you'll see in a comic book shop that is actually buying comics (not Pokemon cards or what not), are mid-20's.

For reference, I started at age 8, and I'm now closing in on 45. I did stop when I was in high school, but started up again in college, going back and picking up back issues of the Amazing Spider-Man that I missed.

Sounds like a lot of the kids at your school need headbutts. Sounds like high school, so it's even more deserved.

High School is probably the worst idea the government has ever had. I want to point out that I'm not just being snarky when I say this, I honestly believe that the educational system in America is inherently flawed and needs a complete overhaul from the ground up.
