I don’t think that it is merely political to try to get to the heart of what factors led to this tragedy.
This was an accident. A terrible accident. Nobody intended for this to happen.
But.
DCA is known as having the most busy runways in the country. And our Senators actively voted to make them more busy just so that they could have more direct flights for their own convenience. They did this despite warnings that something like this could happen.
Then there were the recent hiring freezes and the layoffs which came at a time when there was a shortage of air traffic controllers. Also the head of the FAA was ousted because he criticized Elon Musk. So there was no one in the position of running the FAA at this time.
All of this should be factors to review and to learn from so that incidents like this do not happen again. That’s not being political. That’s being responsible and learning from our mistakes.
Plus we need to factor in the fact that there are narratives that likewise should be rejected as lacking foundation so that this continues to be a teachable moment. So when people claim this is the fault of DEI, we can actually see that this is not a situation where unqualified people were hired at the expense of more qualified applicants. In fact we know that qualified applicants were not being turned away because there was a shortage of air traffic controllers.
These facts matter if we are going to learn from this incident and prevent it from happening again.
