I think we will have some discussion on this as we see what Al Jazeera has in store for their line up.

Update in the Al Jazeera purchase of Current TV.

Time Warner is now looking at going ahead and allowing Al Jazeera on their cable line up.

I happen to agree with this, I don't like censorship whether it is Glenn Beck or Al Jazeera....there is room for all of them on my TV line up.

Al Jazeera is free on HD TV antennas in the East Coast. It's also free if you have a non Dish/DirectTV digital satellite receiver. It's not as bad as people make it out to be. They won a Peabody, and other Journalism awards last year.

I don't have an opinion. I think it is neo-liberal, pseudo-intellecutal/enlightened nonsense to act as if Al-Jazeera (a network that has aired beheadings of U.S. soldiers) has anything valid to say or that watching it will add to one's world view. That being said, they have just as much of a right to air as Fox News, CNN or MSNBC. That is the beauty of this country (which they so eagerly condemn). Conversely, cable providers have every right to follow suit with Time Warner, choose not to do business with Al-Jazeera and drop the network and I hope that more networks do.

    I agree with you....

BUT, Time Warner is reconsidering....they are getting some pressure, and as usual, they will cave to that pressure. Al-Jazeera will be on Time Warner, Comcast has not pulled Current yet, and will probably keep it when it becomes Al-Jazeera....

They have a right to air but I also have the right to never watch it.

Provided the ratings are good, my guess is they will be even worse than Current TV.

Well it was enough news that the US decided to murder their journalists covering the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

IF THEY RUN the channel as they do the English website, then it will be worth my time to give it some of my time during the week, as I do all cable news, EXCEPT FOR MSNBC, I just can't stomach the people that work there....but all others get a little of my time each week.

With that said, I will never be able to use it as a resource for my students to use, just as I can't use the website as a resource. It just would not be a good thing for my teaching career...lol

That is a very possible result. I think their ratings in the beginning will be good....simply because people want to see what its all about, but could very well dwindle.

BTW, all of Current TV's tv personalities have been let go. They pretty much sucked anyway....Joy Behar???? really?????

OF COURSE, I would love to see Joy Behar on Al Jazeera....lmao, that would be entertaining for sure.

They fired her because of low ratings and she moved to Current TV with another show.

It was called Joy Behar: Say Anything

    Switzer moved their as well.

They were pretty much a catch all for all the people fired from other networks (except for Beck).

I think Time Warner Cable dropping Current/al-Jazeera is being a tad bit overblown. Now while I think that al-Jazeera would be a great addition to any cable line up, one has to take into account that there is a very high likelihood that no one will watch it just as how no one watched Current TV. Time Warner Cable was already considering dropping Current TV anyways due to how pathetic the ratings were and the sale most likely gave Time Warner Cable the excuse it needed to do it right away.

MSNBC is such a mixed bag for me. On one hand their morning/afternoon programming is the best morning news content out on cable. Vastly superior to that of CNN and Fox News. But their primetime line-up makes Fox News look subtle.

Well, I think Time Warner will end up allowing it....

And yes the ratings may be low, but for different reasons.

Current TV started out with some pretty damn interesting shows. Lisa Ling did some superb investigative reporting and was very interesting. But, as the years went on they became the catch all for anyone fired from CNN, HLN, or MSNBC, and that put the nail in the coffin.

Al-Jazeera could have great programming, great people....but because of their reputation, and their connection to Al-Jazeera Arabic.

I think Time Warner Cable should at least give al-Jazeera a chance before dropping it. It could end up doing better than Current. It's perfectly reasonable to drop al-Jazeera if it doesn't perform, but I think it at least deserves the chance to succeed or fail. That said, al-Jazeera probably should have done a better job than acquiring Current's channel space. It probably would have been smarter to acquire a channel with a slightly higher viewership to make the transition better as opposed to a channel that no one gave a crap about.

I don't get to see ANY of their morning programming so I can't really comment on that....most of my viewing has been in primetime. As far as Fox, cannot stomach Hannity, I watch Shepherd Smith, the Five, (sometimes The Factor if I see that O'Reilly is covering something that no one else is....ie: the marine in jail in Mexico...and Red Eye IF I'M STILL UP. Don't watch much else on Fox...I do watch Fox Business News, I followed Gerri Willis from CNN to FBN....CNN gets quite a bit of my time...but these days most of my news is coming from news outlets on the internet.

But of course, you will still allow your students to use the SHH forums as a research tool on who the best James Bond was and whether Batman should be rebooted, right? ;)

I've been watching Al Jazeera online for years. It's not what people make it out to be in the states. In fact, I'm a little baffled by the reputation it has with some people, but less baffled since most of the people who denounce it to me have never actually bothered watching it. It's some of the best international affairs reporting you'll find anywhere.

It's also pretty funny to me to hear Israel complain about Al Jazeera spreading "propaganda". I suppose they would know though, seeing how Israel is an expert at spreading propaganda.
