Alex Cross

Idris Elba has signed to play Dr. Alex Cross in Cross, a new installment of James Patterson's bestselling murder mystery series that will be directed by David Twohy. Kerry Williamson wrote the script. Elba takes over the role originated by Morgan Freeman, who played the sleuth in the Paramount Pictures thrillers, 1997's Kiss the Girls and 2001's Along Came A Spider. Twohy is doing a rewrite.

In the novel, Cross tracks a serial rapist who may have murdered his pregnant wife years before. The film is being produced by Lloyd Levin and Leopoldo Goutm, along with the author and Steve Bowen.

Production will begin in 2011, likely in the spring. The film will be privately financed and distribution is being set. Paramount is a possibility.

There are few franchises out there with a black actor in the lead role. So this is a big star-making step for the British actor who emerged from the HBO series The Wire and into films like RocknRolla, American Gangster, Obsessed and The Losers. He just wrapped the role of Heimdall in Marvel's Thor, and next stars in the Screen Gems heist film Takers, which opens August 27.

I've read one of the other Cross novels and I liked the Morgan Freeman movies, plus Elba is an actor with strong presence, looking forward to this.

Oh man if they keep the ending like the books. It will one of the stupidest endings of all-time. After reading the book that finally revealed who killed Cross's wife. I could not believe I wasted my time! I was at the bus stop when I finished the book. It is the only book that I immediately threw in the nearest garbage can.

Also Elba is too young. Cross is supposed to be a old seasoned cop. Especially by the time "he" knows who killed his wife. Oh who am I kidding Patterson is just interested in money.

Tyler Perry is set to star in I, Alex Cross, reports Deadline, who has the actor attached to play the lead in a reboot of the franchise based on the bestselling James Patterson novels.

The series of novels, begun in 1993 with Along Came a Spider, features a forensic psychologist named Alex Cross. Morgan Freeman played the role twice, first in an adapation of the second book in the series, Kiss the Girls in 1997 and later in 2001 when Along Came a Spider itself was adapted.

Perry is best known for writing and directing his own films, beginning in 2005 with Diary of a Mad Black Woman and, most recently For Colored Girls. In fact, his only big-screen appearance as an actor in a film that he didn't write was in a minor role in J.J. Abram's Star Trek.

Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, xXx) is said to be attached to direct the project, which was initially being developed for Idris Elba to star.

From Idris Elba to Tyler Perry. Wow. ANd honestly Ive seen Tyler Perry act in a non Madea role and he was decent, but come on we had Idris Elba and to go to this...

I'd be more concerned about Cohen directing the film. Even his best films don't reflect enough to handle something involving Alex Cross.

And here come the Madea jokes a la Star Trek.

I don't have a problem with Perry as Cross, but I'm not sure Cohen's the right director for this.

I just can't take this guy seriously in a serious role. All I ever see is Medea

Man. After reading the first post I thought to myself "I wonder what Tyler Perry's James Patterson's Alex Cross would be like." And now I'll know. Awesome.

From Idris Elba to Tyler Perry?

Casting fail of the century.

I got all excited when I saw the first post..I was all okay, Morgan was awesome, but at least they got Idris, he's good. Now I find out that Tyler Perry is playing him.

It literally reminds me of the progress of Jack Ryan so far.

Alec & Harrison, then nosedive to Ben Affleck.

Hahahahah what a fail. But I do hope we get an Idris Elba/David Twohy team up one day.

It's not only a miscast (Idris Elba to Tyler is so bizarre) but even the director change is a nose dive!

All aboard the fail boat first stop disasterville!

Hahahahah what a fail. But I do hope we get an Idris Elba/David Twohy team up one day.

Perhaps as the villain in the next Riddick movie...? I could definitely get behind that.

Matthew Fox to play the Villain role

In his first major film role since leaving Lost, Matthew Fox has signed on to play an assassin in I, Alex Cross, the reboot of the James Patterson franchise character that’s being put together by QED with Tyler Perry starring and Rob Cohen directing. Ed Burns has also signed on to play Tommy Kane, Cross's partner. At least three studios are vying for the project and a domestic distribution deal will be set imminently.

Contrary to his virtuous Lost character Jack Shepard, Fox will be playing one bad dude in this film. Fox plays Michael Sullivan, who kills both for money and thrills. He’s known as the Butcher of Sligo and shows why after Cross thwarts one of his killing attempts. Sullivan makes his retribution personal, by killing the detective’s wife in gruesome fashion. Then it becomes a mano a mano battle between them. Sullivan is one of the best known villains in the Patterson-penned novel series.

Comingsoon.net says Tyler Perry has the part which is it ?

Idris Elba is not attach to the project anymore. It's Tyler Perry who will play Alex Cross.
