Alex Garland Directional Debut "Ex Machina"

Saw this tonight and ****ing loved it.

Btw, Ava can get it.

I wanna see it but its only playing in a theater 2hrs away and only at night and I work nights :(

Just saw it and love it. Somewhere along the way I kinda figured it would end in some way similar to how it did. But it was still shocking that...

...Ava was that damn cold. It was like Caleb stopped existing for her after he served his purpose.

Also I was relieved that...

They didn't go the route of Caleb being an AI. I was suspicious that it would be the case going in, and that would have been terribly cliche.

Yeah there was a few moments where it could have gone a way we've seen before but it didn't.

I've successfully avoided all trailers for this and cannot wait to see it on Monday without having seen a frame of it. :woot:

I saw it the same way, and was so happy about that :)

Hope you love it too!

One of the best AI films since 2001 I dare say. Not sure if I liked it better than Spike Jonze "Her", but this was fantastic. I wish they explored the science and the concepts of psychology and consciousness a bit more. The two male characters never really engaged as deeply as I anticipated in a back and forth debate. I also couldn't buy Isaacs' character making the decisions he made without having more of a clue. It was just too big a leap for me at the end, but I immensely enjoyed it. Not gonna see the likes of an AI film like this in some time.

Usually, I'm against sequels to films like this, but I'd love to see where they would take this story and "universe" in another film as long as it remains a small-scale, tight thriller like this was.

Yeah, she straight up used him and I don't blame her for doing so. In her eyes, he was being somewhat of a *****e in their first few sessions and ultimately, he was there to test her and observe her like a lab-rat. Based on her experiences with Nathan, she probably never dared to trust Caleb -- even though he was being sincere in the end.

Caleb realllyyyyy wanted to **** her, though. LOL.

I said the same after seeing it. I would love to see more of Ava out in the world and people Close to Caleb as well as his work mates are going to notice him being gone at some point.

I am absolutely in love with this movie. I think the most chilling part of the whole experience was
feeling a little bit happy for her that she made it to that street. Happy for a damn AI.

We are in trouble.

This and Automata would make for a great double feature.

Holy **** Ex Machina was a great film. Great characters, performances, pacing, directing and writing. It's the thought provoking, actually well made, sci fi that I have been craving.

My favorite film of the year so far. I haven't seen tons to be fair but anyway, great film.

So I just saw it, it's not as mindblowing as I was expecting but it's a very solid film. I'd give it a 9/10.

It was.

That's very much how I felt. It wasn't "mindblowing" but I found it to be well done all around and it was a nice update on some older robot story tropes.

I think the film also works as a great examination/critique of a lot of "women as property" or as princesses that need to be saved that is incorporated into a lot of ideas of masculinity. The films actually quite unsubtle in that regard but it is on point.

So glad this is finding an audience in the US, it was the first movie I saw this year in January and a lot of it has stayed with me. Nits a really good movie and I can't wait to see what Garland does next.
