Alex Garland Directional Debut "Ex Machina"

Just got back from seeing this. Probably my favourite film of the year so far. Lots to think about and I feel another couple of viewings are needed to appreciate everything that was going on.

Great film!

Feels like Ghost in the Shell 2017 should have been written by Garland after what he did with Dredd and Ex Machina, could you imagine that? :drl:

WB/DC should hire him instantly. :yay: (I've lost faith in Marvel due to their stupid scripts. They really do not care to present something sophisticated or remarkable.) (Sorry for Off-topic.)

The ending is alternately chilling and mesmerizing. I'm honestly curious what kind of damage Ava will wreck due to her programming and actions.

Didn't like the ending. Ava was very unlikeable with how she treated someone who only wanted to help her.

I'm very conflicted on which movie I like more Ex Machina or Mad Max. It's going to be hard to top these two movies, at least for me. I was hoping to catch Ex Machina in theaters again but our theater dropped it after a week.

She is an AI. You can do all the programming you want, but she is still an AI. One of the main questions they brought up in the movie was, could she ever feel real emotions or just pretend to feel them?

Fair enough, but it still coloured my view of the ending. My review went from a 10 to a 9.5.
I pretty much had the same reaction to the end of No Country for Old Men, love the movie right up to the ending.

you didnt like that she did something mean to the young boy?;)

i quite liked the movie, the ending was harsh and cold, but imho, very fitting.

suited a 'robot' well / AI humanoid. She's the advanced version/stage of the work the programmer worked on for years. She played the 'poor sap's' mind and tricked him into getting what she wanted. Perfectly executed imho.

The ending may be a tad sad for the 'good guy' but let's face it, he was a bit stupid. Him inserting that card was just asking for it. If he had used his own card he might have escaped and lived. Who knows.

Either way, the ending was fitting and left a good opening ending.

Ava as a perfect human imitation that can do whatever she wants now,
and the creator and good guy who know who she is dead (he'll die of thirst and hunger) so no testify and no quick hunt.

It remains to be seen whether anybody will ever find out about that house, it's so remote and secluded nobody will accidentaly stumble upon it. Only the company itself missing their employee could eventually start into a search, the guy is an orphan so no family in that though.

IF there will be a second movie i can see it either being AVA using her skills to advance more AI into the world, eventually overpowering the 'normal' humans, or a x-men versus humans scenario when police discover the remains and video proof of what unfolded.

in any case, i think the movie was great and does not need a part 2. it's good as it is and its' possibily even stronger to keep it like it was.

i give it a solid 9.5

it would have been a 10 if she actually got 'jiggy with it' with her prey. the nerd never went for it though.

The ending turned the film into a different kind of film for me. Up until then, I wanted them to escape as a duo. When it happened, I got really emotionally involved and then the credits rolled.

The ending was traumatic and thought-provoking. Truly great filmmaking.

But for ultimately selfish, masculine hero fantasy reasons.

While quite cold, what Ava did was a matter of pure survival. Gleeson's character knew who and what she was and therefore she would never be safe. She couldn't trust him to help her further or keep her secret. She had had literally only a few conversations with him.

The ending is suppose to challenge your emotions. Even though Oscar Isaac was a *****e, ultimately he was right about Eva and that's the thing might make you go 'Damn'.

Comes out June 1st UK Sam. Got my Zavvi steelbook pre-ordered. :D

You British bastards.

This reminded me of the movie The Machine from last year

This felt nothing like The Machine to me. There was rumors about the director of that movie seeking legal action, but was called out on his bs online. They only have in common the character name and AI angle to it.

Yeah aside from the AI and AVA thing, it wasn't anything like The Machine.

The Machine had a siimilar theme (The classic sci-fi troupe of dealing with AI) but is fairly different from Ex Machina.
