Alex Garland Directional Debut "Ex Machina"

Just got back, and hot damn, what a great film. Easily my favorite of the year so far. I've been a fan of Garland for a while, and Sunshine is one of my faves, but I usually come away with some sort little nitpick about his screenplays that keep them from being 10/10's for me. But not this time. I'd say this was his strongest screenplay yet, and his direction was perfect too. Wouldn't change a thing. 10/10.

That's very much how I felt. It wasn't "mindblowing" but I found it to be well done all around and it was a nice update on some older robot story tropes.

I think the film also works as a great examination/critique of a lot of "women as property" or as princesses that need to be saved that is incorporated into a lot of ideas of masculinity. The films actually quite unsubtle in that regard but it is on point.

My thoughts exactly. I do hope it finds a bigger audience though, it's one of the films you want more people to see.

Yes, it's a movie that you should support. I love the dance scene.

I think it's unsettling because you expect it to end this way and when the twist happens your whole process is shattered.

I'm gonna tear up the ******* dancefloor, dude.

it's just amazing how his hips move. As if..his hips has AI!

Anyone know the name of the track used in the dance scene? It sounds familiar.

Hmmm.

To those who watched the movie: Is there nudity in it?

I hadn't heard of this movie until yesterday when I saw a TV spot, and now I feel a need to see it. I love a good sci-fi film! :woot: Sci-fi's definitely been on a resurgence recently.

Apparently it's this: [YT]JdY10c_ZwQU[/YT]

Well it's just strictly nudity, nothing more.

I know these are two completely different films but in your opinion do you guys think this is better than kings man or no?

I liked Kingsman a lot, but I liked this a lot more.

If all else, you would have to compare this to Chappie.

Incredible movie. Right from the start it really grabs a hold and doesn't let up at all. Oscar Isaac is a beautiful creature.

And yeah, that dance scene was so perfect and bizarre.

I love how this movie didn't go the obvious route with Caleb learning that he was an A.I. himself. They address that possibility quite nicely with the bathroom scene. Ava completely fooled me. That cold hearted machine.

Nathan was the best though. Just a bro working out in the middle of nowhere being a genius drunk off his ass.

This film was nothing short of perfection. Favorite film of the year so far.

Yeah I brought that up as well. Going that route would have been too cliche. We've seen that type of "twist" plenty.

And Ava didn't really fool me. I thought she was using him. But no, I didn't expect her to coldly leave him to die.

This movie was fantastic. All three leads gave fantastic performances, and the premise is fascinating and disturbing on so many levels.

Side note... after watching this film, I'm really starting to think this rumor about Gleeson playing Luke's son in Star Wars is true. Not only does he look a bit like Mark Hamill (when his hair is blond, like in Ex Machina) but when he does an American accent, he SOUNDS like Hamill. I mean like, a lot. I don't think I would have picked up on it if they hadn't used Hamill's voice in the latest SW teaser.

Anyway, I could be completely wrong, but this kept jumping out at me the whole time I was watching the movie.

Is there excessive gore in this movie? I'm just curious. It doesn't seem like the type of movie that goes all robo-apocalypse on the audience.
