Sigourney Weaver And Ridley Scott To Team Up For Alien-Less ‘Alien’ Sequel?
Published by Josh Horowitz on Friday, December 5, 2008 at 3:55 pm.
There has been a neverending stream of speculation about the future of the “Alien” franchise probably since the very moment “Alien Resurrection” crashed and burned with most fans. Could James Cameron or Ridley Scott be weighing a return to the franchise or would we be cursed with more Predator crossovers? These are the questions that can try a man’s soul.

But wait, there is hope! When I chatted with Sigourney Weaver the other day (check out her take on the “Ghostbusters” sequel here), the actress definitely seemed to still have plans for her iconic alter-ego. “There’s definitely uncharted territory for Ripley,” she promised.

However Weaver wondered if the alien itself can and should factor into another film after the exposure its gotten in two “AVP” films. She asked aloud “whether there’s unchartered territory for a creature who’s become somewhat debased by this computer generated thing. I haven’t seen ["Alien Vs. Predator"] but I just think if you overexpose the creature, that’s a mistake.”

Weaver confirmed that she and Scott have discussed re-teaming for a fifth film, “Both of us feel a kind of commitment to that woman. He’s as much responsible for who she is as I am.” Then as she opined on the way the alien creature had been ruined in the recent films, Weaver’s comments got especially interesting.

“We’d have to go back to the drawing board on [the alien],” she said. “Ridley said that right away when we first talked about [a fifth film].”

And finally, the quote that’s gotten me mighty curious, “What we’re interested in is taking the character of Ripley and seeing what other science fiction story we can tell about someone who has lived several lives.”

I didn’t really process what Weaver was saying at the time I suppose but it sounds to me like we might be less looking at “Alien 5″ and more of “Chronicles of Ripley.” Are Scott and Weaver thinking about an altogether different type of sci-fi adventure for the character? Color me intrigued.

Are you?

No.

Ripley shouldn't have even been in Alien 3 or 4. I don't like that the story somehow became about her, and not about the Aliens/Corporation

Anything's better than Aliens Vs. Predator: ******s.

"I say brilliant if it where to happen! Remember the day when Sci-Fi films where made to reflect situations of the current times? Imagine hero returning past her use-by date (a satire on the current franchise revival trend) to an eonomically ravaged future with a newly elected government administration exausting all it's resources trying to fix the fudge ups of the corrupt and inept MNC's like Weyland Wall Mart.

Not to mention the possibility of Ron Perlman being in a Ridley Scott movie! A true recipe for awesomeness!" - Me on another forum.

As much as I wanted this movie to happen, I think that it's too late, especially now after AVP 1 & 2. Scott, like most top directors, always have several projects in the mix at any one time. Alien 5 may in fact be one of them, but I think it's probably the least likely to be realized. A more promising thought is that Alien 5 might be one of three sci-fi projects Scott has in the mix ("Brave New World" and "The Forever War" being the other two). This leads me to believe that Scott is intent on making at least one more sci-fi movie before he's done.

As for Weaver, I'm sure she'd like to headline a tentpole blockbuster once again. Who could blame her (although she does co-star in Avatar, so that's something).

This actually sounds rather interesting...

Weaver said last year she would never do another Alien film again seeing as AVP ruined the image of the Aliens.

Must be the money talking

i think Ressurection started the whole "overexposing"...so she's to blame too. lol

I will never forgive David Fincher for killing ripley, newt, hicks and bishop in Alien 3, and rather ham-handedly on top of it all...

rant aside, I would welcome a Scott-directed film focused on Ripley in aonther circumstance, if they wish to retcon the events of 3 and 4, so be it...

^ I agree with you on Alien 3. I also agree that the Alien has been overexposed, and this needs to be addressed for the next film. The idea of exploring the "several lives" aspect of Ripley sounds exciting.

Well, in her commentary, it sounds to me like Weaver and Scott were discussing about a spin-off from the franchise without the Aliens themselves appearing. Thus, it's technically not an 'Aliens' film.

I'd be up for Alien 5 but only if it was directed by Ridley Scott ir James Cameron, and there are no predators within a 1o million mile radius of the film.

Ridley Scott and Sigorney are back!....of course Im excited!! Alien and Aliens are one of my favorite films ever!! Both surely have a spot in my top 15.

I think that they should make a sequel to Aliens and just forget that Alien 3 and 4, and the AVP spinoffs ever happened!
And shes right.....overexposing the creature was a terrible terrible idea!

I think they should make a new one and have to take place after Alien(s)2. Just ignore 3+.. Guess they can not bring back the girl who played Newt since it ihas been way too man years now.. Maybe have her killed off right at the beginning, and continue with Ripply and Hicks, Bishop.

OIr what the Heck.. Aliens vs Riddick.. lol.. yeah unfortunatly after #2 the alien franchise took a size 9 to the nadz.

Ridley Scott returning to Alien would be one of the greatest movie events we've had in a long time.

If Ridley did the whole "returning to the Alien homeworld and explaining what they are" bit, that could be interesting.

But Sigourney Weaver I could take or leave.

This would also be interesting.

I would want it... If they make Alien3 & 4 non-canon.

And to have it re-edited to hell, forget it I'd rather not have a Alien 5.

No.

I agree. I always wanted a backstory, or rather, further information into the Corporation. Of course I always wanted to see Ripley return to earth also, but now that I think about it, AvP has killed that scenario. I always felt that the Corporation knew about the aliens, but just wanted more samples/specimens or rather were using crews as bait for their own experiments in which someone on the crew was always a member watching from behind the scenes.

Hell, if anything I would prefer to see a fim about what went down on the planet from Alien before the crew arrived to investigate.

I'm all for an Alien V, although I agree it wouldn't be needed if Resurrection hadn't been made so badly. I'm a big fan of Alien 3 - it brings back the bleakness and horror of the first and a fitting end for Ripley. (One that Cameron would never have the balls to write)

No more Ripley. I only want Aliens and the Corp.

Could be interesting, I agree that the Corporation should be more involved this time. Explain more about their interest in the "Xenomorph" and what they plan to do with them when they have samples.
