I don't know if it's the suit but I do think that's the first time he's flying. Maybe he learned how in the Fortress. I also think he just learned that it's the yellow sun that gives him the power, hence why he looks up and closes his eyes in the sun rays.

I think he would've flown well before that while growing up on the farm.

I dunno, why's he hitch hiking then? He could zoom through the air. Without his suit, people would think he was a bird or a plane ...
