elmayimbe ‏@elmayimbe 2m: "@MrJonathanKing: @elmayimbe Mr Mxyzptlk!!" Spoiler!

Could they be really bringing Mr Mxyzptlk in for MOS 2, in kind of an attempt to radically change the character and make it modern like they did with the Joker?
I hope not. I hate that character. Just as much as I do toyman or the riddler.

Point? If you've been given the heads up that Clark Kent won't be donning his iconic glasses and classic suit in this installment because the director and writers want to go in a different direction yet you're disappointed in the result, who is to blame here?

How much of Bruce Wayne's business alter ego was on display during Batman Begins? Not much.

If you're aware of the concept they were implementing but disappointed in the execution of it... how is that you (the viewer's) fault?

lol, I don't think so. I think elmayimbe was being sarcastic.
I know, I didn't mean he was serious, but seeing that name I was just wondering, kind of a "what if..." mind-set.
I think it could be an interesting and innovative choice, maybe not as a stand alone villain, but together with another threat.
What do you guys think? Could it work?

Boom.

Kidding though.

You mean the giant alien ship blasting a white destructive beam of energy down into the middle of a city leaving ruin and rubble in its wake?

No, didn't catch that part :cwink:
Guess I walked into that one.
Well Done .
Ashley Nemer posted on her blog that she liked MOS,but she felt the film borrowed from Idependence Day and other films .
Some people here took issue with that .
And she came here briefly and people were pretty much all over her about The Independence Day thing .
She also said that although she liked the film she thought it was average .
That didnt go over very well.

I can only hope audiences like the movie as much as I did. Both my wife and I came out of the theater excited to see where Snyder/Goyer might take take Superman.

The movie had its issues but I think it really set up the character well.

See, I'm not talking about execution here in that sense. Jed's complaint was that the film featured so little of Daily Planet Clark Kent yet we were made aware that Kal-El wouldn't be a journalist in this installment. I don't know how much he or she followed of this production, but if he/she is like us, I don't see the reason of being 'disappointed' that Clark Kent wasn't behind a desk.

Funny how a week ago and average rating from a critic would get your flogged but today it would get you a party

"as Man of Steel provides enough exhilarating action and spectacle to overcome its occasional detours into generic blockbuster territory." Rotten Tomatoes.

I just think some critics are being a bit harsh because its nothing new in terms of the movie genre. "Another typical blockbuster with too much action". Why does it have do something thats never been done before in say Avengers, Spider-man or Wolverine? Why give it bad points for sticking to the formula?

I do wonder what the critics reaction would have been if this came out before Avengers. It would be similar to what it is now, but I wonder if there would be slight differences.

I see what you're saying but allow me to retort with two feasible explanations:

1) What if he/she wasn't aware at all that the Daily Planet Clark wouldn't be shown until the end?

2) What if he/she felt that the little bit of Daily Planet Clark that was shown felt shoehorned?

It's hilarious how opposite some of the reviews are about the same things. I'm paraphrasing...the story is great and emotional...the movie is void of emotionabd the plot sucks...etc. I will be watching this bad boy in an hour!!! Dinner afterwards so I may not be back on here until the morning!

Can people who have seen both Into Darkness and Man of Steel help me out here?

I don't see many films per year. MOS and STID are the only two on my list for this year so far. I can't begin to express how disappointed I was with STID, yet it has an 87% on RT and many people & critics loved it. Why is MOS being considered so much worse, in their opinions, compared to Star Trek?

I've hedged all my bets for an enjoyable movie experience this year on MOS and now the reviews have me a bit nervous. I'm still hopeful, but if it's a flop, I'll probably be giving up on Hollywood for the foreseeable future!

I haven't seen MOS yet, but I can feel what you're saying. I did have an "enjoyable movie experience" with STID, although I don't think it's a very good movie. I had really low expectations though, because I didn't like the previous Trek film. I wish I could say I had higher expectations for MOS. I remember the discussion on these boards when it was announced that Snyder and Nolan were taking over the franchise, and that WB intended to quote, "go dark." I also had some serious issues with how Watchmen was handled. Right from the start, I felt that something was wrong, and I was glad to see that I was not alone in feeling that way.

Now I have avoided spoilers and know very little about this film, but I've skimmed a couple of reviews today, and I already know that this was not what I was really hoping for in terms of a reboot...as a lifelong fan of this character and comics in general. I still have plans to see it next weekend with my usual group, and possibly this weekend, but I can totally understand some people refusing to go at all, just as I can understand how some Trek fans passed on seeing STID.

If you ate the same BLT every week for a few years then I showed up and told you next week's BLT will be groundbreaking and exceptional, and when you finally ate it found it to be exactly the same as the others you've eaten wouldn't you call it typical too?

I don't know if that is fair. What didn't go over well was her being a Will Smith fan who seemed to believe that many of the common science fiction tropes and imagery shared by Independence Day and Man of Steel originated with the former film rather than being incredibly common.

My guess would be option #1. A fraction of fans thought the Daily Planet/Glasses scene would be in located in the second act but the popular theory was that it'd be one of the final scenes to the film. Of course, that's only speculation. He/she likely wasn't aware Kal-El would spend most of this film discovering his identity and roots, and kicking ass. I could definitely see that as a 'casual' perspective.

Reaaaaaally getting tired of the 9/11 comparisons. It's understandable for films like TDK or TDKR where it was intentional but not every action movie that features big destruction is an allusion to terrorism. It's rather distasteful.

The Independence Day comparison will not pop to mind unless specifically called out i.e. while watching MoS you won't go "Oh ID4" unless someone specifically asks you "Did any scene remind you of ID4?". Even then, the only comparison with ID4 is the spacecraft over the city. Although here it is only one craft rather than the whole fleet in that movie.

Well, Berardinelli like it. With reservations, of course:

http://www.reelviews.net/php_review_template.php?identifier=2630

3/4 stars.

So 3 out of my 4 go-to critics liked it (1 unabashedly loved it, 2 liked it with reservations), and one (Roeper) didn't, though he says it certainly has its moments. I'm feeling good about my chances of enjoying it at this point. Just a few more hours!!

Enjoy yourself Flickchick!!!! I'm green with envy right now. I gotta wait until tomorrow. :argh:

Mr Mxyzptlk won't fit in a serious and somewhat grounded world like this. A sillier, more All Starrish tone would need to be present for a character like that.

Yes, that was the response but I think Ashley was just giving her opinion.
In the short time she was here,
She was called a witch, a troll and a fake .
I think the reaction was a bit over the top.
And I still dont believe people liked her calling the film "Average".
She was asked why she said it was Average and gave it 3.5,
She had to explain her rating system.
And I know they are many who disagree about her point about Independence Day .
But with his response to my original post Poni Boy made the similarities rather clear .

Thanks, I plan on it!

And might I recommend going to bed early? Then your viewing will be here before you know it (hey, worked for me on Christmas Eve all those years). :woot:
