All Things Wonder Woman: An Open Discussion - - - Part 12

The trailer gave me similar vibes to the original Thor, both good and bad.

+The cinematography and art direction looks mostly wonderful and unique.
+The central story and romance looks charming
-Sometimes it looks a little low-budget and dated
-Underwhelming in how little it plays with the source material's more fantastical elements.

But if done right, those positives will outweigh the negatives for me. Thor is my favorite MCU movie after all.

Personally think the Thor movies are the worst two of the MCU, so I really hope WW isn't like them!

There's a different feel to WW than the previous DC films. That alone makes me positive.

not sure if anyone has mentioned this...

Trevor seems to be tied with the lasso :cwink:
Amazons need to be sure about the truth.

As do all women. I'm sure women everywhere will wish for a lasso of truth for Christmas 2017 :o

Really don't get this - mentioned time and again, but there are worse actors and actresses in other movies of this genre that don't seem to get half the flak Gal does... I saw absolutely nothing wrong with her part in BvS, and nothing whatsoever in the trailer so far to say she's a bad actress... she seems absolutely fine to me!

No, there's not, and she gets what she deserves. She managed to sound awkward in BvS (she worked in the party scene though, where she probably just got to be herself), despite having so little to do, and it continues here. There's no other superhero actor that can't even deliver simple lines like that.

So there's a clear reason why many people all over are criticizing her acting, and the reason is her.

Lead actors? off the top of my head: RDJ,Ruffallo,Cumberbatch,Affleck,Miller,Pratt,McAvoy,Fassbender,Jackman,Reynolds,Evans,Hemsworth,Garfield,Lawrence,Scarlett,Saldana,Boseman,Larson.

I dont think Gadot is terrible or anything but she isnt nearly as good as most on that list

I only responded in kind. But of course you don't care that the other person stated opinion as fact because his opinion suited you, right?

Not to mention that everyone knows that we're talking about opinions.

She sounds very wooden in the trailer, but if BvS is any indication, she will be fine.

None of the current actress who portray a major cbm lead were that good. Despite Jennifer Lawrence's Oscar, she wasn't that good in the X-Men films. Scarlett Johnson and Zoe Saldana were just average. Of the current actors, I would say mainly Andrew Garfield, Michael Fassbender, RDJ, Jackman, McKellan, Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy were all above average in their cbm leads. Haven't seen Dr Strange, so Benedict Cumberbatch could be added.

Gadot is fine, and frankly I cannot tell how she'll perform as the trailer gave no indication due to her speaking scenes being all just a few seconds short.

Some people have unrealistic expectation for a cbm film. lol My only expectation for all cbm films is that it's entertaining and enjoyable. If I want a serious film, I'll seek it elsewhere.

I still say that - at least to some degree - “acting” is being conflated with “accent.” Also: even the best actor in the world might have trouble selling “It is our sacred duty to defend the world” and “I cannot stand by while innocent lives are lost.” :cwink: Given such stalwart, superhero-y lines, Gadot does just fine.

See, when I used to read WW in the comics I just defaulted her like maybe an American or slight British accent because that's what was implied. Now I'm trying to give her Gal's accent, lol.

Sweet baby Jesus this movie is killing it on the trailer front. If the movie delivers on the across-the-board quality on display in the first two trailers, Wonder Woman is going to become the champion of the DCEU, much in the same way Captain America has really become the face of the Avengers and the MCU overall. I'm by no means a WW fan, but this is definitely my most anticipated right along with Episode VIII next year.

A lot of the little flaws from Comic Con's footage seem to have been addressed perfectly. The color palette is spot on now - Themyscira is showcasing richer, bolder colors, and London and the war front are nicely contrasted. The cinematography is not only stylistic, but telling a story. The effects shots that have carried over from July have been tuned and are cleaner, so some of the newer ones that are less polished will surely be improved by the next trailer and/or the release date.

We got a lot more story and Gal, both of which are on point. I don't know what the ***k people want from her. She sounds fine, even with out-of-context dialogue being chopped up in editing. Her face acting is great. She can sell a pretty wide range of emotions, more than what I've seen from her in other roles. She still has a lot of skill development to go, but she's nowhere even close to bad. The story beats are also there, and it seems the movie will really tackle some heady concepts. If Geoff brings his A-game on the Wonder Woman front, I think we're in for something truly special.

I will say that I'm starting to see all of Patty's defense of the film starting to be backed up in the footage. It really looks special.

So does this movie seem the most "Marvel-esque" out of the DC movies? I'm talking about general tone and cinematography. Obviously it's not going to be as light or humorous, but I'm just asking in comparison to all the other DC films we've had.

I think as long as the studio stays the F*** out of the kitchen this time and lets Jenkins release her vision then I think we're going to get a really good film. Just like with BvS and SS, this looks like it has all the right pieces in play here, its just a matter if those studio asshats decide to interfere or not.

No, it looks nothing like a Marvel movie. It's also different from the previous DCEU films so far, and that's thanks to the whole "directors driven" studio thing that people are mocking now for some reason. You can tell Patty got to tell the story her own way with her own style and visuals.

This is entirely Jenkins' film. The trailer seems consisted of a relationship drama between Diana/WW & Steve Trevor, just like how Jenkins envisioned. I'm only going to credit Geoff John with screenplay which is a first for him in theatrical contribution and DC charactesr stories/background contributions.

What would you say it looks like then? What would be the closest comparison?

The only comparison I could think of is the first WW trailer (since I haven't seen the second). :o

Hey everyone! long time not posting. I thought the exact same thing. The movie looks and feel as stylized as all DCEU, but there's a certain Marvel charm one would say, at least in the trailer.

About Gadot's acting skills, she'll do just fine. She's not as bad as some make it sound. Her accent is thick as a rock, but wooden she's not.

EDIT: Scratch that. It's a certain Donner charm what I get from the trailer and it makes it even better.

That studio released a cut of Suicide Squad cut together by a trailer company, so it's quite fitting that they get mocked on that account. That's one of the least director friendly things I've heard about.

It's also a pretty funny attempt at a jab on the competition, given that directors like Gunn and Waititi has said that they were surprised at how free reigns they got.

But that's what we get in the fanboy war. Some can't praise one thing without tearing down the other.

Wonder Woman doesn't feel like a Marvel movie to me. It just feels like its own thing, though the color palette does remind me that this is the DCEU.

It reminds me of Nolan. Mainly "Batman Begins", but more epic and grand. Not saying Nolan can't do those things, but he chose Batman for a reason - so he can make a very realistic CBM. While Patty Jenkins is obviously making a serious movie with serious themes, she's not shying away from the magical and fantastical elements of Wonder Woman.
The Wonder Woman animated movie.
This too. Good example.

Saying it's not like Marvel is a jab, eh ? Move along.

The line between saying it looks nothing like a Marvel film and then say that the film looks like it does because the studio lets the directors do their own thing is pretty clear.

But I'm glad for you that you got to use an animated gif to make your point. That's always the sign of a good post.
