Exluding the police...

No more car chases at speeds on the highway into over 110 odd mph... No more leaving late, speeding to get to work or school just to get in an accident. No more drinking and driving feeling invincible speeding at 2 am killing a family in the process.

What if it there was such a mandate that all cars be set at 80 or even 75mph as top speed? Would you support this? Why or why not?

The problem I have with it, is that I don't see much a a difference whne it comes to a drunk driver hitting a family at 80 or 100mph. A ****load of damage is going to be done at the least, and everyone is most liekly still going to be killed.

The same is at 60mph too.

And this isn't even takign into account the number of people that work on their own cars all the time. They could easily find a way to get past that block.

The only thing that would really protect people from really doing a LOT of damage is if you made everyone go 25 mph all the time, and hell no to that idea, that would just make everyone angrier.

We don't need slower cars, we need more responsible drivers.

i've considered this same idea before. it seems like an obvious solution to a lot of road problems. i cant seem to find a down side either.

Fact is many accidents are a result of that kind of speeding. Saving lives, or being able to leave late and ALMOST get to work on time? Stop being lazy bastards and get ready earlier. Don't get pissed at people who don't want to speed like a jerk and start cutting people off with NO F'N BLINKERS at ridiculous speeds. Cops can still mandate that people have the speed block in their car by CONTINUING to use radar. Then pull people over that go past the designated limit with not only a ticket for speeding, but also a warning of losing their license if they don't regulate their car.

I never go above maybe 85 but I like the idea of knowing that I can go faster if I wanted to.

yeah 80 wouldent mean much in the majority of accidents.cars would still run from the police, alot of them do it when there tires are shredded off.The other tihng is that would make super/turbo chargers and car upgrades illegal and that would take alot to accomplish.

If they make cars that only reach 80mph (max), then you're going to have a lot of people flooring their cars. And that's not just to reach 80mph. That also means it's going to ruin your car's acceleration. If 80mph is the speed you reach while flooring the gas pedal, imagine how tough it'll be just to reach 65. The limits in some states are 70 or 75mph. You can't maintain 75mph on a 80mph (max) car for very long without doing harm to your car.

As long as I can still buy a motorcycle that can go over 120 MPH.

as long as a reasonable amount of extra acceleration is encorporated into the vehicles in order to allow them to manoeuvre around obstacles in the case of an accident, then that's fine...

personally, i think all cars should be allocated with an inhibiter chip which automatically knocks off their top speed when entering certain locations so cars are always bound to stick to the speed limit.

Thats a great idea. Bloody genius. Until you need to make an emergency acceleration to avoid an accident, or to pull around a slightly slower vehicle.

Plus what if you want to take your car to Gumball 3000?

NO!

This would be a thing of the past...

My piece of **** '84 Cadillac Cimarron's top speed is 85. If I ever went that high it'd break down pretty quick since it stalls after going 50 for 30 minutes straight.

Move, *****, get out the way, get out the way, *****, get out the way. When you see me on the highway, get the **** out of MY WAY. :o

No one’s going to let all of the exotic car companies go out of business. Might as less the Corvettes or whatever.

Seconded. For a second there, I was all "WHAT THE ****!?!?!?!!?!" Its a stupid idea. Like going 20mph cant kill someone. :whatever:

Great post. People need to stop trying to solve problems by making rules and taking away liberties. It always comes down to personal responsibility in the end.

My question is....why didn't they do this in the first place?

And I'm all for making driver's licenses harder to obtain.

it's hardly a libery, speeding is illegal. vehicles shouldn't need to travel drastically over the speed limit at any point in time. Having this as a selling point of a motor vehicle is somewhat irresponsible, which is probably why speed is not an aspect used in motoring marketing anymore, at least on televised advertising.
