I thought for us political people, a little alternative history game night work here.

OK....
The rules are...
One person, posts a scenario...
for the rest of the day, you cant debate and comment on what you might think would have happened.

The FIRST POST of the next day, is when someone must post a new scenario.
and then it continues....

Keep them somewhat serious...but it IS fiction, so you can throw in a little creative spin...

Confirmed positive contact that intelligent aliens are to arrive at Earth in 1 week.
What would the world leaders do?

The fact that we waste little time in organizing plans to destroy each other leaves little hope that the world leaders wouldn't destroy any form of alien life to arrive on Earth.

On the plus side, the whole human world would be united against a common "foe" and that could lead to us putting aside our differences.

I agree with Steve, and very surprised to see him. It's been a while.

If the contact was Positive (say, like First Contact with Vulcans on Star Trek First Contact), then I think all nations would probably gather to meet with them at the UN. Ofcourse, President Obama would sit down with them with no pre-conditions.

If they were hostile. We would be F'd, because we didn't elect Bill Pullman for President.

Confirmed positive contact that intelligent aliens are to arrive at Earth in 1 week.
What would the world leaders do?

I think firstly, most of the religious institutions will be in chaos, as people will have their faith challenged like never before. World leaders will probably interpret this is a hostile move, and may try to ready weapons in case of an invasion. There will be countries who see this as a positive step forward, and wanted to greet the aliens with open arms. But I think U.S., European Union, and Russia/China will probably prepare themselves for a possible attack.

President Obama meets with his National Defense staff, as well as his scientific advisors for how to work this issue. He works with National Guard groups to make sure the populace does not get out of hand.

Working with allies across the world, they send a signal of some sort to the aliens inviting them to meet in the open areas of Montana. Leaders and associate leaders all over the world meet in Montana to talk to the aliens for the first time.

Absolutely....
The Religious institutions will have to try to explain that.

I would imagine seeing new religions exploding, coming out of the woodwork.

Well, comics are fictions and do not represent the real world. If we had superheroes, aliens, and ability to travel to outer space, I don't think the people's belief in religions won't be affected in any way.

as i said before most religions would say these aliens were just a sceintific interpratation of angels or demons.

They can say it, but it is up to their followers whether they will buy it or not.

Am I the only one who thinks the government would go to ridiculously great lengths to ensure the people do not even know about the aliens' pending arrival and even then, try to cover it up? After all, if it became common knowledge, I'd imagine there would be quite a few people believing the end of days were upon us. Thus causing riots and mass chaos as well as economic collapse.

As for a new scenario, this one is easy...What if Lincoln had not perserved the Union. Not saying that the South won, I am saying there was no war. The Confederacy and Union simply went their seperate ways. What would both countries be like today?

There would probably be a sort of cold war between the Confederacy and the North for several decades. I cant imagine a lot of trust between them, considering the negative feelings that were there before the war (which would still exist if the war never happened).

A war might be inevitable after the establishment of the League of Nations or the United Nations. (Assuming the rest of world history goes on as we know it. Question: Who does the Confederacy side with in WW2?) I dont see the outside world approving of insitutionalized slavery in a nation. (Yes, I'm keeping in mind the current sweathouse labor in India and South America. Its not the same thing as slavery.) Diplomacy would be used, but after nearly a century of independence, the Confederacy wouldnt be about to change. So a war breaks out between the Confederacy and the North and its UN allies.

Another possibility: Considering how slaves badly out numbered whites, there might be an uprising against thier masters. After the coup, the North moves in to secure the country. The North wouldnt want a country governed by blacks on its boarder. At that time, who knows? Would the Confederacy be re-absorbed back into the Union or would a Civil War break out? I think it all depends on how much damage was done during the slave uprising and how much will to fight the south still had.

I could see the North becoming an industrial power....and the Confederacy aligining itself with Spain and France to secure Mexico and the Caribbean...one of the Confederacys plans, if they won the war, was to expand to South America and establish a 'Tropical Empire'....I think some sort of armed conflict between the Union and the Confederacy would break out eventually

Interesting.

Let's asssume the Union let the South Cecede without the War happening. I believe the Economic upheavel from the North not trading with the south, we would have seen the economic decline of the Confederate States. They would have eventually not be able to raise the revenue to build up the Military enough to guard against the border.

The North probably would treat the South a lot like we treat Cuba today with an economic embargo. The Population of the south would have "invested" more into Slavery to try to build up their Economy.

The South would continue into economic decline, but because of Essays written by one Mister Karl Marx would start to circulate around the Southern States. There would be then Second American Revolution causing the South to become the Conferderated Communist States of America.

The Communist Party is acknowedged as Freeing the Slaves. The South begins to build up Militarily. The begin a Partnership with the USSR. With the North laying ties with Britan. The First World War begins between the North and the Soiuth, spreading across to Europe, then the rest of the world.
