Twentieth Century Fox's chipmunks are plotting their third outing -- and this time, they'll be in 3D.

Studio has set a release date of Dec. 16, 2011 for "Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D."

Right now, the threequel has the date to itself. Set to open a week later on Dec. 23 is Steven Spielberg's 3D family entry "Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of Unicorn."

The "Alvin" franchise has been a lucrative one for Fox, New Regency and Bagdasarian Pictures. The first film, released in 2007, grossed $361.3 million worldwide. Last year's "Squeakquel" brought in $429.8 million worldwide.

First film, released in Dec. 14, 2007, grossed $217.3 million domestically and $144 million overseas for a total $361.3 million. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," opening last Dec. 23, grossed $217.4 million domestically and $212.4 million overseas for a total $429.8 million.

It'll be interesting to see which movie will win at the BO.

Tin TIn Or Alvin .
Internationally the crown will go to Tin Tin since more people know about it , even if ALivin has 2 movies out.
Also it's going to be a bit like 2009.
Dec 2009 had of Avatar the big 3-d release , Alvin 2 and Sherlock Holmes
Although the date hasn't been set , expect Holmes to be released in dec 2011
Tin Tin is also the other big 3-d release post. Avatar.

why? why? WHY????? WHY??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Theres no point to these chipmunk movies anymore.

Wanna watch a chipmunk movie?, watch "The Chipmunk Adventure", THAT´S the chipmunk movie.

My initial reaction was to face-palm at not only another Chipmunks film, but another 3D film as well. Then I realized that I am probably not going to see this, and all the little kiddies that are, are probably really going to enjoy it. So then I felt bad at face-palming at a child's happiness. :csad:

The first 2 movies have made over 700 mil.If I were Fox I would start planning for a 4th and 5th movie.

i likedthe first onethe best. . i do have two alvin and chipmunks cds ones the first moive sound track and the called undabile cd

Oh lord. The first two were awful enough... but another one in 3D, blegh.

I hope Tintin automatically beats this by default, even if it ended up being Spielberg's worst movie on record. At least that guy tries different stuff and puts his heart into it, unlike Fox and their money-grubbing ways.

If Alvin 2 performed well enough against Avatar , then Tin TIn shouldn't be a problem. Plus the 3d is just to srenghten the earnings although personally i don't think it's going to have a huge effect.

Well, the thing is Fox released both Alvin 2 and Avatar, so they benefited either way. Not so with Tintin, which is released by Paramount.

Will get a 3D scene of Theodore crapping raisins in our faces?

I want the Chimpunks to redo Linkin Park songs

I called this! :o

I knew this would happen with the third film.

The **** is wrong with their arms?

I can only assume from the costumes, poses and the subtitle that this is their version of The Hangover.

the pun, and the poses made me facepalm, and thats coming from a chipmunks fan

I am guessing that is going to be with Green Lantern
