Now in the opposite direction of the Van Helsing thread, I seemed to be one of the only people who actually disliked Serenity. I LOVED the show Firefly, but I really felt the big screen version was lacking.

I love Joss Whedon, his tv work and some of his comic stuff at least, but the movie convinced me he works better in a medium where you can build long burning character arcs. The movie felt too rushed. Characters I loved and were most original (Jayne as a wannabe bad guy who has an inescapably good heart, a religious man in Book who isn't portrayed as a crazy loon) got pushed to the side for characters who were not only done better in the tv show, but have been seen plenty of times before in the genre (Mysterious super girl, rough and rugged hero and bland pretty boy doctor). Mal in the show came off much better; here he seemed bitter about loosing the war to the point where it became hard for me to empathise. He seemed like a spoilt child in that if his side didn't win, he would try to sabotage the other,d espite the war being over.

The revers were fearsome in the show, here despatched in minutes by a sub par superchick. Not to mention I didn't find River in the least bit interesting in the show, ditto the movie.

Am I the only one who wished they let the show lie in peace?

Serenity was awesome. Dunno why it flopped at the box office. People like you I guess.:p

I'm kinda glad it flopped....I love the movie, but it was way too hyped up. At the very least it was mediocre. Not terrible but not exactly good either.

I pitty you. :(

I have no desire to watch it. It looks like the typical Sci-Fi channel stuff.

Plenty of other people didn't like it. Do a search for the Serenity thread that was going on when the movie was released. There was alot of hate....and alot of love. Personally I loved it. Was it the best movie ever made...course not, but I enjoyed it.

You liked Van Helsing and you didn't like Serenity? Why do people like you keep joining these boards. I am eagerly awaiting some your future threads like "Am I the only one who liked House of the Dead & Am I the only one who disliked The Devils' Rejects?" or "Am I the only one who thought Get Rich or Die Tryin' was great & am I the only one who disliked Hustle and Flow?"

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

Sure, but there comes a point when their opinion is just hurting society and they need to be stopped.

Well, the main problem here is that you didn't like River. The point of Firefly and to a greater extent Serenity is that it's "Mal's story as told by River." While there's no actual narration, River acts, in a way, as our eyes into the 'verse. And, her story was a major part of the movie.

As for the Reavers, I don't think the point of River beating them was to make them look weak, but to emphasize that she's basically the ultimate super soldier.

You weren't the only one. It didn't exactly light up the box office.

It flopped because everyone overestimated what was essentially a cult, niche audience show.

serenit? never saw it. Why? cuz I nver liked firefly, don't see the appeal it's supposed to have.

I never watched the show. But the movie was a good popcorn flick. Dialogue couldn't be any cheesier.

This is far better than anything someone from the Sci-Fi channel could ever dream of making, not that that is saying much, but "Serenity" really is a great film.
