They tried to give other heroes from Smallville, a chance. His name was Aquaman...but as we all know, Mercy Reef suffered a worst fate than Runaway. It didn't even get aired (yet, some how Runaway got approval for at least three episodes on the CW. Go figure). However, other heroes seem to do a bang up job on Smallville. Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg and now Green Arrow. Each of them has left a lasting impression. Rather than the basic Buffy/Angel baddy of the week formula, it seems that Smallville is mixing it up with the "Hero of the season" formula. As for Superman, I agree that his character type, can lead to less interesting scenarios. I think that is why Spider-Man movies have a greater turn out than Superman did. Superman is very serious, very heroic, and very clean cut. No real jokes or straying the line. He knows his purpose in life and he pretty much sticks to it. Superman is more admirable than cool. He's the guy who stays home while school is in session, and does his homework. Only goes out to hang out, on weekends he has free, or when there is a break between quarters. Nobody really finds that guy fun...but everybody has to respect him, for doing the right thing. That's what keeps me appreciative of the character at least.
