WASHINGTON Today's the day when the nation's population officially hits 300 (m) million.
The Census Bureau will record the moment at 7:46 a-m, Eastern time. But don't expect any photos of new babies. That's because many experts believe the population actually hit 300 (m) million months ago.The government is letting the milestone pass quietly, although Census Bureau workers will enjoy cake and punch. For one thing, it's not easy estimating the exact number of people in a country the size of the United States. Then there's the matter of illegal immigration.The Census Bureau has a "population clock" that estimates a birth every seven seconds, a death every 13 seconds, and a new immigrant every 31 seconds.The 200 (m) millionth American was born in 1967, and the United States adds about two-point-eight (m) million people a year.
