Well this is horrible.
American Psycho is headed to television. FX has put in development an American Psycho drama series that takes place decades after the events in the 2000 movie starring Christian Bale and the novel on which the film was based. Lionsgate TV, whose sibling Lionsgate Films was behind the American Psycho feature, and FX Prods are producing the series shepherded by former Lionsgate Films head of production-turned producer Allison Shearmur and writer Stefan Jaworski. Described as an update of American Psycho, the drama series fast-forwards from the late 1980s, when the movie was set, to present day. It will feature serial killer Patrick Bateman, now in his mid-50s but as outrageous and lethal as ever, taking on a protégé in a sadistic social experiment who will become every bit his equal — a next-generation American Psycho. The project will be written by Paradigm-repped Jaworski who will executive produce with Shearmur and Ed Pressman. The project originated at Allison Shearmur Prods where it was shepherded by Stephen Meinen.

Could be worse. Could have been on the CW...

Could be worse. Could have been on the CBS...

Fixed. CBS would turn it into a straight procedural. At least the CW would let it be fun. :o

And honestly, the movie is ridiculously overrated. If anything, FX could make it better.

This sounds terrible. Didn't they pretty much already do this with the crappy DTV sequel with Mila Kunis?

So, if it's on the same night as Bates Motel..... THE BATES MEN FRIGHT NIGHT!

ADDING: Wait, nm, different channel - would have been AWESOME if it was A&E though.

I'm interested in this because it's on FX.

I don't know guys, this whole thing reeks to me. As a massive fan of both the book and the film, I just feel that the idea of Bateman taking on a protoge contradicts so much of the character. I can accept the idea that he actually DID kill all those people (the book makes it fairly obvious that everything was all in his head, even though he shows up in Glamorama with strange stains on his suit, while it's a bit more ambiguous in the movie), but a Bateman sidekick? That doesn't really jive.

This feels like Dexter and Batman Beyond had a love child.....

We need a famous serial killer..... Bateman!!

I know she wasn't his "protege" (and it's been years since I watched that piece of ****, so excuse me if I don't remember every detail), but I meant with someone carrying on his "legacy" and becoming the killer. From what I remember, Bateman killed her mom when she was a little girl, and she ended up killing him (as a kid), only to go on and become the killer herself. So yeah, I may have stretched with them "already doing this," but I stand by the comparison.

That being said, there is no way the show will be worse than the Mila Kunis movie, so there's that. I'll hold off final judgement until I know more about it and check out the pilot, at least.

I take it Bale will not be involved in this.

Color me intrigued. It's easy for some of you to reject this project when there's only one broad-stroke sentence to describe it: "mid-50s Patrick Bateman takes on a protege in a sadistic social experiment". No, that doesn't sound particularly spectacular, but we also haven't been exposed to the intricacies of the project. If it's half as sadistic, witty, and satirical as the original American Psycho film was, it's worth making, IMO. And if the show winds up being half as good as Nip/Tuck or the first season of American Horror Story were, it'll be worth watching.

Seriously, there's plenty of great material that can be mined from the character of Patrick Bateman. Those who are disappointed in the soft, half-hearted final season of Dexter should take solace that we might be getting a real look inside the mind of a twisted serial killer. The best part of Bale's performance in American Psycho was the awesome inner-monologue we got through Bale's voiceovers. And while the events of the book/movie might have taken place inside Bateman's head...who's to say the entire series won't just be one, long twisted fantasy? I'm more than interested to see what they come up with for this show.

My only gripe as of now: WHY CAN'T THIS BE HEADING TO ****ING HBO??!!?? Jesus, just the thought of having to sit through 4 or 5 commercial breaks per episode makes me want to vomit...and the show hasn't even been filmed yet. Each episode will wind up being 40-45 minutes of actual content. A little lame. Also, it's a crying shame that we're going to get a tame version of the series versus the no-holds-barred version we would be getting if this was going to be on HBO. Yes, I know that FX gets away with a lot in terms of violence and sexuality. American Psycho is a different beast than American Horror Story though. The fact that we won't ever hear one F-bomb and that we'll never see a naked prostitute is a taaaaad disappointing, if ya ask me. :)

Pretty much. Aside from Charlie Sheen's show, F/X usually produces quality stuff. And you only have to look to American Horror Story to see how they handle horrific/violent material.

I think there's too many shows about serial killers going on, first Dex, now Hannibal and in the future we get American Psycho.

One of the highlights of the movie was that it was also funny in a way, but not going to the point where it was silly. I would love if they get Bale to play Bateman, but that won't happen, 99% sure. It can be done right, but tbh I'm kinda tired of serial killers atm.

This could be really good or terrible so I'll reserve judgment. I hope it lives up to the film because it was borderline briliant.

I really am curious to see how image/appearance-obsessed Patrick Bateman operates in a world full of Botox, HGH, and testosterone replacement therapy.

It's FX...so it could be great.

I mean, it could be bad. But, there's definitely a chance that it could be good. And they get away with alot of **** on that network. I'd feel better if it were on something like Showtime, though.

A weird ****ing premise, though. Part of the magic of the film (and novel, I'm told) is the overindulgent 80's era with which Patrick occupied. I guess he could be easily transplanted into an equally overindulgent era with vanity and image obsession still present.

And who would make a great 50 year old Patrick Bateman? I'm guessing if they go with a plastic surgery angle, he could be played by a 40 year old who just looks younger because of it?

One thing I am actually looking forward to is Patrick Bateman chopping someone with an ax while explaining the complexity of Kesha lyrics, playing from his iPod dock.
