For those too lazy to read the wikipedia link... this school of thought thinks that we should do away with all technology and forms of civilization. They basically think we should go back to living like chimps.

Here's two main problems with this...

  • If I'm reading this they've already hurt their cause, reading is part of civilization and computers and paper is technology.
  • There's too many people for the entire world to go back to hunter-gather types of life.

lol, this made me think of that line from Hitchhiker's.

This will make more sense when the Earth is destroyed by pollution.

Nonsense.

The doctors and scientists and businessmen and other non-hunter types are pretty easily weeded out. Over a few years.

Anarchism in any form is as dangerous and stupid as inviting Celine Dion to a karaoke bar.

A mass transition into the sort of situation described is unfeasible without a definite paradigm shift in man's nature. However, the general concept, that humans were better before the development of technology and complicated societies is definitely a debatable point.

Also, it seems like you're misinterpreting this as a movement or ideology. Most of these people will approach things in a theoretical view and try to personally use less technology, convince others to, etc. There are definitely some individual violent Luddite nutjobs, but it's not like this a concerted effort to force everyone into being cave men.

We can't escape the sh-ty state of human condition.

Technology or no technology, humans will always be cruel to one another.

"It disturbs me no more to find men base, unjust, or selfish than to see apes mischievous, wolves savage, or the vulture ravenous." - Jean-Paul Sartre

Actually a humans cruelty is worse than an animals because it's premeditated.

do they really think people are really going to give up technoloogy and live like chimps?

I think in the future everythings just going to get more and more commercial in some wierd kind of Hyper-Capitalism, so companies will own villages, towns and even cities and make their own rules.

If Jean-Paul Sartre were still alive, I would suggest you call him and debate that.
