Mandarin *does* attack his own people. Comic books, I mean. He actually spends most of his career terrorizing China and fighting the government and military while trying to take over the country for himself.

So I can't really see why China would have the film banned, so long as the movie doesn't paint its government and people in a bad light.

The same Chinese newspaper that reported Andy Lau in the first place also reported on three potential replacements who are already being auditioned. I'm sorry I don't keep up with Chinese cinema so I don't recognize their names, but it sounded like their credentials were adequate.
