No, it's not, especially by video game standards. It's not the best Batman story ever written, but it's not the worst either.

No. Not at all. Some games are among the greatest stories I've ever heard. Arkham City doesn't come nearly close to some games with amazing stories.

Not at all.

video games have been telling amazing stories for over 30 years now. You just haven't been playing the right ones.

Damn thread manager!!!! :argh:

:o :oldrazz:

To me, a good story is important, though it's importance in relation to gameplay I'm not certain of. It's why I personally prefer these Batman games and the Metal Gear and Assassin's Creed series over the likes of Mario.
But Batman: Arkham City does have a good story and gameplay.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I do love a good story. I've played Assassin's Creed and it was amazing. It's just not the first, or even second, feature I look for in a game. If a game that I already enjoy happens to have an awesome story, then that simply increases its awesomeness...

To illustrate... my all-time favorite video game is tied between two N64 games: GoldenEye 007 and WWF No Mercy. Banjo-Kazooie comes in second.

And yes, I adore the Nintendo 64... and miss it... :(

Arkham City's story is far from crap, even though I thought that Hugo Strange was criminally underused in favor of the Joker and it was a bit too convoluted in its second act.

I certainly think that it has a strong grasp on its characters.

There was plenty changed about Ra's Al Ghul in BATMAN BEGINS. He became less of an environmentalist, and more anti-crime/corruption. He became his own Ubu.

I absolutely missed Scarecrow's more interesting costume.

I will miss Bane's addiction element if it is not dealt with.

And Two-Face being burned by fire, in the manner he was, because he fell into some gasoline and happened to get half-burned, was just borderline stupid, and incredibly cheesy and convenient. There's a very unsubtle metaphor there, but it could have worked well.

But he didn't have the straw or the skull-shaped fear-gas sprayer.
The skull bulb and the straw aren't neccessarily defining Scarecrow attributes by themselves. The scarecrow mask itself is significant. The straw and the method of gas delivery, not so much. The straw is part of the Scarecrow persona, which was intact in the film. Straw, by itself, doesn't mean quite as much as Catwoman's whip and claws do.
Like I said... like all of the other villains, it will be in the characterization. She has the stripper past and she's a cat burglar. She'll be nimble, quick, and out for herself and herself alone.

If only they had/have the imagination to both give her real AND metaphorical claws and a whip.

Catwoman doesn't need the whip, but it helps. The whip isn't just an accessory, it's one more thing that sets Catwoman apart from other female characters, and catburglars. She has a varied skill set, and the whip is included in that.

So he doesn't have a gray spandex batsuit. What else is missing?

Well, for one, he apparently kills people to solve problems.

It hasn't. You're not just getting a visual characterization that is a slave to previous versions of Catwoman

Except that she is, in large part, quite clearly based on previous Catwoman designs.

Julie Newmar's/some of the earlier designs
The "classic" long gloves/boots look.
The modern redesign

No one is asking for every detail. Just the very basics. It's not about what's needed. It's about respecting a mythology. It's all well and good to make changes, if the changes are A, better, and B, more relevant to the approach.

Ra's Al Ghul's immortality being "legend" more than truth? Good idea, in the context of this franchise.

Joker having makeup instead of dyed white skin? Good idea, in the context of this franchise.

Bane having pain killer instead of a serum that makes him pump up? Good idea, in the context of this franchise.

Catwoman having actual claws and whip just...because...thus far, just seems like an oversight, like the stupid clunky cat's ear goggles.

I think that some of the Metal Gear Solid games have had intriguing stories, even though they are sometimes mired by a huge wave of exposition.

If he's enjoyed playing the games then he has.

With Catwoman being a glaring exception. You're comparing it to other Batman games with is kind of a stunted way to look at it.

I'm comparing it as a whole game versus other games and it doesn't even come near the first three Resident Evil Games. The First 10 Final Fantasy Games (especially VI), Any Legend of Zelda Game, Uncharted, Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid, Parasite Eve, Chrono Trigger...the list goes on.

It's a fine game but the story is weak with a twist that made me, literally, face-palm.

I am looking at it through the prism of other games. I've played Metal Gear Solid 4 and throughly enjoyed it, for example, but those kind of games are the exception, not the rule.

And Legend Of Zelda's story is piss-poor in comparison to Batman: Arkham City.

I'd like to go on but, We've taken up enough of this thread with this discussion.

Back to Catwoman!

Didn't Berry's Catwoman have the whip? I'm almost positive she did.

Nice (not really) Halloween costume. I love it when people dress up. :awesome:

Yeah... it was the first pic that popped up on Google. I used it because I honestly don't consider that Catwoman. That was a deviation that happened to share the name...

I actually own the Halle Berry Catwoman movie! On VHS! It has never, ever been watched!

But lacked in everything else. Anne without whip in comparison with Berry with whip should not go much further on a "Who's-Better" discussion.

She's already better for not being Halle Berry; as was Bale with George Clooney.

Doctor Who evolves into... WALTER WHITE! :wow:
