So this morning I was surfing the web as usual & all of a sudden, I get this annoying popup saying my security firewall or something needs to be updated. I checked my control panel & everything was up to date. I tried closing out the pop-up but then it started saying I had all these threats & that I should installantivirus 09 & pay to fix all of the problems. I was like "wtf?" tried closing it all, but nothing. Now when I start up my computer on normal mode, I get a window saying explorer32.exe needs to be closed, & a blue screen comes out & I have to shut off my laptop. I tried scanning my computer on safe mode using Mcafee, & when it gets around the 10,000+ files, it just stops & sits there.

I tried resolving the issue with Dell, but you have to pay like $500 to talk to some "specialist" since my warranty is expired. :whatever:

I really don't know what to do anymore. :( Is my computer completely fried now & should I try getting a new comp?

My parents had this on their PC. After spending several hours trying just about every suggestion listed on the net (including the link given in one of the above posts) I finally broke down and just bought Norton Antivirus. It took a few reboots after I installed Norton but it cleaned it right up. This virus was probably the most persistent I've come across in a long time.

AV 2009 is Spyware...malware...viruslike and NASTY to get rid of.
Trust me, I have tried.

Soooooo only type of real progress I've made today is that I found the stupid Antivirus folder in my programs folder in the C drive. I don't think just hitting delete will get rid of it. :o

I tried downloading Spybot S&D but I got some error there trying to download it. Saying there was no connection.

get malwarebytes. it gets rid of Antivirus 2009

start > run > msconfig startup tab

look through those files and google some of the processes. uncheck which ones are potentially dangerous to your system and reboot your machine. you might get enough time to run a few legit virus scans

As much as I'd love to try that, I can't get to my darn run button. :o:cmad:

Well, after trying to do everything I could possibly think of, I had to a PC Restore to my laptop. I saved the items that were on my desktop on a USB I had, but when I went to upload them, they weren't there. I even followed these steps there perfectly. Luckily, I didn't have a whole mess of important things on my computer anyway. The only thing I want back is my Photoshop but I have to wait to get the CD back from my sister's friend..hopefully.:o

On the subject of backups, it makes sense to have a usb drive to hand, and back up important stuff when you think of it.

I try to write backups to two different backup media (another PC across my network, or an external hard disk)
