Tony Scott has lined up a future project in the form of Narco-Sub, Variety reports. The action thriller is set up at 20th Century Fox from a spec script by David Guggeneheim.

Plot details of the project have not been released, but narco-subs in real life are so named because they're submersible vehicles built to transport narcotics (particularly from Colombia to Mexico) and their compact size is designed to elude radar.

Scott's last project was 2010's Unstoppable, also at Fox and he has plans to tackle Hell's Angels for the studio as well. He was also recently linked to a big-screen remake of Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch.

Guggenheim, meanwhile, is responsible for the script to Safe House, to be released in early 2012 through Universal Pictures.
Sounds cool, can't say I've seen this particular subject tackled before and it's ideal for an action thriller. Wouldn't be surprised to see Denzel sign on as the cop leading the team out to stop the subs.

It'll be interesting to compare a new Tony Scott submarine film to Crimson Tide. If it's as fun as Unstoppable, I'll bring the beer.

Doug Liman in Early Talks to Direct Former Tony Scott Project ‘Narco Sub’ (Exclusive) -

The “Bourne Identity” director is in line to take over the 20th Century Fox film
Having wrapped the Tom Cruise movie “Edge of Tomorrow” for Warner Bros., Doug Liman is in early negotiations to direct the action-thriller “Narco Sub” for 20th Century Fox, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.
Tony Scott was previously attached to direct “Narco Sub” before his death in 2012.
David Guggenheim (“Safe House”) wrote the script on spec and developed the project with Simon Kinberg, who will produce through his Fox-based Genre Films banner. Aditya Sood will oversee the project for Genre Films.
Scott Free is also on board to produce the film, with Elishia Holmes and Michael Schaefer overseeing for the company. Fox exec Steve Asbell is overseeing the movie on behalf of the studio.
“Narco Sub” will be set in the drug world, as the title refers to semi-submersible crafts that South American cartels employ to smuggle cocaine into the U.S.
Liman is best known as the director of blockbuster action movies “The Bourne Identity” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” He has been developing an “Everest” movie as well as an adaptation of Jack Finney’s sci-fi novel “Time and Again.”
Warner Bros. will release “Edge of Tomorrow” on June 6, 2014.
Liman is repped by Resolution and attorney Alan Grodin.

Seeing Tony Scott's name pop up was surprising. Liman is a pretty good choice given the subject matter.

I saw this thread and immediately thought "How's that going to happen?" before I saw the date.

Although Edge of Tomorrow''s Doug Liman was said to be up for the job earlier this year, Deadline is now reporting that Training Day and Olympus Has Fallen director Antoine Fuqua will direct 20th Century Fox's Narco-Sub, the action thriller that was, some years back, planned for the now late Tony Scott to helm.

Scripted by David Guggeneheim, Narco-Sub explores the real-world drug-running submersible vehicles that are used to transport narcotics (particularly from Colombia to Mexico). Because of their compact size, the subs are able to elude radar.

Fuqua's next, The Equalizer, is targeted to hit theaters September 26, 2014.

Neeson & Kirk To Captain "Narco Sub"

By Garth Franklin Tuesday March 24th 2015 08:04AM
Liam Neeson is likely to star and "Game of Thrones" and "Luther" director Brian Kirk has closed a deal to direct the long in gestation action-thriller "Narco Sub" at 20th Century Fox, Scott Free and Genre Films.
The story follows a notorious Ecuadorian drug lord who forces a disgraced American naval officer to navigate a cocaine-packed submarine past the U.S. Coast Guard.
David Guggenheim ("Safe House") wrote the movie which Ridley Scott and Simon Kinberg are producing. Tony Scott, Doug Liman and Antoine Fuqua are among the filmmakers who have circled early incarnations of the project.
