Hey I have an idea for a comic and have it plotted out, looking for an artist willing to work with me on it. It's a star wars based book and if I can get an artist to work with me on it. Once it's done I will present it to Dark Horse to see if we can get it published.

If interested drop me a note and send me an example of your art to

I've tried hiring new artists in the past...and every single time the work has not been done, and the demands for money are usually on par with what Jim Lee would make ("my art is as good as his, so I should make the same money per page").

These days, if I ever need an artist for a project, I fork out the cash for an experienced artist who knows how to get a job finished, and has at least a small degree of name value.

Thanks for the info Heretic. If I can't find anyone willing to do it for free, I'll pay.

But if I am going to pay I'll get Louis Smalls Jr or JG Jones to do it. Both I have met, and actually have become freinds with Louis, from working at the Wizard concventions. Just both of them are very busy and hate asking for somethng like this.

Funny thing about the "I'm as good as so I can should get paid this much" mentality. I know both those guys would most definetly give discounts to someone starting out and had an idea they were on board with. Yeah they make that much from Marvel and DC because they are big companies that can afford it. Most Comic Book artist are like that, because they know how they had to struggle to get started in the buisness. So people that think they are deserving before they even get published aren't worth my time.

Whether it's acting, modeling, comic art, music...whatever...you have the people who are breaking their butts to get ahead...and those waiting for the success to come. If someone is not actively out there, making their own work for themselves, building their resume, then yeah...they aren't worth your time and will only delay your project.

Also, if you JG Jones, the comic press will take your project more seriously and will run your press releases a lot quicker than they will if it is an unknown. So, your exposure is going to be greater, you'll have a better chance of getting some good review quotes, etc.

But yeah...if you are able to locate that very, very rare artist who is willing to do great work in a timely manner for little money in hopes of getting some published work, then awesome...you hit the jackpot.

Hi Dave.

Can I ask how long the story is, how many pages would it be approximately, and what kind of story it is? I mean, Star Wars obviously, but is it darker like RotS, or more space opera?

Hey Kevin,

Drop me an email for specifics. Don't want to post too much here.

It is a darker story in the over all tone, most definetly. Takes places right after Sith and has to do with what happens to 2 survivng Jedi.

Number of pages? I want to work that out with the artist. Would like to do it in 21-24 pages (but I know that's a lot to ask) so what ever I can work out with the artist. If I just we just do the first 10 as the sampl and it's enough to sell the idea then great.

Heretic - JG jones actually lives in my neighborhood, and is a huge Star Wars fan. That's why I am considering asking him. Seems like an obvious thing, but I've only talked to him like 3 times, so feel funny asking him.

Hey daveswb. One thing I can tell you from experience is that since you're dealing with a licensed property, there's really no point on involving an artist to draw the story since the licensor, not the comic book publisher, has the final word on approval.
Your best bet would be sending the script to Dark Horse to see if they're interested or can include them on their SW books, and if so, they will pair you with an artist themselves.

I will keep that in mind. There is also a small part of me that would like to work with an artist to see what the experince is like and if it never gets published at least I'd have the first book done for me and the artist that did it. Does that make sense?
