Anybody reading the Anita Blake comic?

I was briefly a fan of Laurel K. Hamilton's Anita Blake novels. I read the first five novels, but stopped reading midway through the 6th novel, because of it's erotica approach to literature. I deemed it's writing style to be very feminine in approach and theme, as only women tend to consume literature that bases itself around erotic fanatasy of powerful men and sexual exploits. Prior to the over sexed take on the characters and the stories, the books were actually pretty damn good. The major focus was around detective work, within a super natural setting. It had all the markings to be a modern successor to the likes of Anne Rice. The first five novels, to that effect, are sheer genius.

It was much to my delight however, to roll into my local comic shop today, only to notice that Marvel had published a comic book, based on the very first novel of the series. The most pleasing aspect should be the fact that Marvel is helping to expand readership (by introducing comic fans to the novel, and novel fans to the comic), but for me, most of the excitement lay in being able to see how an artist visioned the characters. With Laurel K. Hamilton (the author and creator of the novels) supervising the entire project, I know that the depictions, will be as close to her imagined ideas, as possible. I had almost considered picking up a copy, just for the sheer novelty, but I later decied against it. Having already read the first five books, reading the comics wouldn't do much, beyond their visual angle. That doesn't however mean that there is no market for this book among readers of the novels. Like I said, the visual aspect is a large lure, as it will iron out any discrepancy between Laurel K. Hamilton's vision, and reader interpretation (I for one, never perceived Anita to be so chalk white). Has anybody else dived in on this comic? And if so, do you read the novels? And if you do, has the comic, lived up to your expectations?

For me, vampires are just SO played out...books, tv, movies, comics...

It's just become dull imo, so i decided to pass.

The books have turned to ****. Hopefully this series is better.

The only thing that really interested me at all about these is that they are based in St. Louis, but I've never gotten around to reading them...

I read it and found it very enjoyable. It's now on my pull list.

I really liked it. I'm a big fan of the books and I've read everybook except the first (I haven't read the newest one just because I never buy hardcover) so it's an even bigger plus for me. It reads nicely, heavy on narrative, but that's because it's a clear holdover from it's novel roots. My only problem is that Anita is very pale, she is said to be somewhat pale in the books but she's also more-or-less identifiably part hispanic (or is it Mexican Native American), so her being so pale doesn't work for me from an "I've read the book" point of view and from a "she just looks wierd" point of view. But it's really good. I personally think the Anita Blake stories just get better and better so I'd love for this series to be really well supported, so that we can get some Edward action.

For those who think it is just another vampire story, I suggest that you maybe glance over the first few novels. She is vampire hunter/executioner, but ultimately she encounters other super natural beasts, more than she does vampires (well...to a degree). She fights various lycanthropes and mythical beats. For now, the comic should bene. They can tone it down to a PG level mostly, just by making the more violent and sexual scenes, off panel, or hinted at. But the later novels will be something difficult to pull off, because they have XXX grade sexual acts, that are mixed with NC-17 level violence (against children in particular). The entire first year run of this comic, is based on the first novel only. If they do actually find some success, the comic will always be grossly behind the novels. If they always use the 12 issues to 1 novel format, then it will be 14 years, before the comic book, catches up with where the novel is now. I am excited about this project, but I would be very surprised to see this series thrive this long, as a comic book. Also for the record, I agree that the later books really went wrong. Having Anita go from an asexual and strong woman, to some lusty and loose woman, just really wrecked what Anita could have represente. I mean, she starts having sex with people, to satifisy her aduer. That was the lamest angle they could have given her. They just turned her into an emotional wreck and a ****.
