I have my wife halfway convinced to letting me buy a motorcycle so ive kind of been lookin around on Ebay and whatnot but im in over my head a bit.

What i mostly want to know is how big of an engine do i want? i mean c.c. wise...

I'm not interested in a crotch rocket or anything. just a nice bike that i can ride to work and cruise around on during the weekends and take my wife with me on short trips so it has to accomodate two people.

Oh, and i have to try and keep it under 5k or it's a no go.

Thanks for any info!

Try a Yamaha Virago 250. Plenty of bike if you're just starting out, and at $3999 MSRP brand new, you'll have room for accessories. If you can talk her into a bit more money, you can get a Yamaha V-Star Custom for just under $7000 nicely loaded(ie., more comfortable seat for her) brand new. The Virago is 249cc and the V-star is 649cc. You may want to opt for the larger engine for passenger riding, but I think either will be fine for you. You can look up both on their site: Yamaha Motorcycles.

I've been told that if you want a fairly stable bike that can go the long distances, you need at least 500 cc.
