“Experts concluded that each 50 gram portion of processed meat eaten daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%.”

The Wolrd Health Organization has declared that processed meats are a carcinogen and red meat is "probably" carcinogenic.

I, for one, could care less and plan to eat bacon and steaks as much as I want until the day I die (probably of some type of cancer).

Does this sway anyone's opinions on eating meat here on the Hype?

Eh, if we are applying Star Trek logic, then the Vulcans are right, because apparently a high-protein diet makes you fearsome to look at, but a complete ***** in a real fight.

That is misleading. Take a look at list of things they list and you'll realize that literally everything has a measurable amount of increasing your risk of cancer. This includes being up late at night because it messes with your circadian rhythm.

You also left out that the WHO pointed out red meat (they singled it out over poultry and fish) still has nutritional benefits and it is primarily processed red meats, not all red meats.

Every damn thing gives me cancer, next they will expect me to quit smoking too :o

Well, more people than ever is getting cancer. And it's really nothing new that processed meat and other junkfood is one reason for that. Personally I don't avoid meat completely, but I certainly mix it more with healthier food nowadays after both my parents died in cancer a few years ago.

The safest bet is to just not eat anymore.

That's what I'll do.

I'm just going to eat everything via osmosis. Gonna walk around with steaks duct taped all over my body

It's really just a matter of eating things in moderation. Having a balanced diet. Cooking food more, avoiding a lot of fried food and fast food style things.

"Apparently, the Vegetarians/Vegans Are Right"

No they're not.
Like many things, all lays in moderation.

You also forget people are living long enough to now die of cancer rather than some other horrible disease.

*checks insurance policy*

"Yep Im covered."

*orders bacinator with extra bacon and a side of bacon cheese fries fried in bacon grease*

Reading Supehero Hype causes death. Everyone who reads this forum will die

.......at some point.

**** those veggie lovers and their soy everything. :argh:

My sister is a vegetarian, and I dread eating over there.

I don't mind vegetarians. It's the pretentious ones who have to let everyone know they are and why they are and how you are evil for consuming flesh that I can't stand.

ehhhhh.........

People who don't drink soda/cola at all still have an edge in that aspect to people do who drink it even in moderation.

I just watched a documentary Forks Over Knives that suggest vegans may be right

There's still a lot of research to do regarding food, and you can't discount DNA.

Except it's completely ignoring context, the human diet including meat in it, that this is mainly processed meats, not meats in general and there are a host of other things mostly related to bad luck with genetics that are likelier to cause cancer than the foods you eat.

Yeah, a diet of nothing but processed anything will increase the odds but singling out red meat is just media sensationalism that ignores processed fruits, vegetables, grains and anything else is equally as likely to increase the odds of cancer.

Vegetarians and their ilk just choose to ignore the finer grain details in favor of being "proven" right.

Less hotdog, more tartar steak, less meat overall.
Got it.

Preach. Also, sorry Sundancer, but anyone who references "Forks Over Knives" in their favor is a loon.

As a vegetarian, I'd like to point out that I don't give a damn about the personal health or morality (meat is murder) issues surrounding the lifestyle.

I am far more focused on environmental impact. That is, water usage and co2 emissions.

As a former cancer scientist, oxygen radicals are a known DNA damaging agent, so. Just being alive can cause cancer, since deleterious mutations can occur every time your DNA copies itself.

Eat bacon in moderation. Don't go overboard with it. Same with everything else.

More people are getting cancer because they're getting older. Age is still the biggest factor. Young people who develop cancer mostly have s*** luck. That's all. (And yes, I say that as someone who had a friend die of pancreatic cancer at 31. Zero risk factors. Just s*** luck. Cancer totally sucks.)
