Are people afraid to give firm handshakes?

Seriously, is it just me or do young people these days give weaker handshakes? First week of school and I got like two dozen dead fish handed to me. This isn't the first time I've noticed it either.

I remember when I met a bunch of World War II vets, when they shook your hand, it stayed shook.

What is up with these weak *** handshakes?

I had no idea there were still people who judged others by their handshake of all things. Weird.

People that give strong handshakes are obviously up to something. :sus They are trying too hard. They're covering up the fact that they are pod people (Trumpy!!) or something. :cwink:

Oh you never get a weak handshake from me! The limp fish handshake usually implies a lak of conviction and willpower. Not so with my handshake! I try not to crush people's hands though.

I always think a soft handshake meant brittle bones disease. :word:

I was always taught better to break a man's fingers than give a limp handshake.

I go for a weak handshake because I try not to hurt your hand. Then some guy comes with a hard one and tries to act like he's tougher than me because he came harder.

Oh I welcome a nice, form hand squeeze. Limp handshakes seem to indicate to me like I said that the person lacks conviction or their a neurotic germaphobe.

That's a tad on the overgeneralization side, don't you think? By the way, conviction is not in and of itself a sterling trait to have. I'd bet Osama Bin Laden gave a great hand shake full of conviction. :yay:

The only times I've gotten a weak handshake was usually when I was shaking a woman's hand. Like they were afraid to touch my hand or something.

I don't like shaking hands because I don't want to catch the aids.

I was actually advised that you shouldn't try to give too strong a handshake unless you intend for things to be antagonistic between yourself and the other person. People who squeeze during a handshake are basically competing with one another, and it kills any potential for anything other than a competitive and rivalrous dynamic.

I always give a firm handshake, but this seems like a silly thing to get up in arms about.

Well, that's what we were taught in Careers class, to always give a firm handshake as if your life depended upon it, and in my generational gap firm handshakes were the difference between getting hired or not. I guess in this overly PC world of the overly sensitive limp handshakes suffice but not my generation. You give me a good squeeze of the hand, got it? I want to feel a good grip on mine because that's the career conditioning I received. Go for the gusto!!! Don't be afraid to apply a little pressure!

I was born in 1976, so I aint no teenybopper. I think a hand shake is about as telling about a person as any other surface detail. Which is to say, not telling at all. A pure bred professional BSer is going to have a great hand shake and come off as the person who has the most conviction in the world. Doesn't mean squat. Real actions tell me more about a person than surface detail. Also... What does "political correctness" have to do with any of this at all?

Pfft. Giving a pound is better and more sanitary anyway.

I just tell people my hand has intimacy issues.

I still get chuckles out of that old line. :hehe:

I think the FOX reporter who said it did it in a way that even she couldn't believe she was saying such stupidity on national tv. I am sure she, herself, has a great handshake, firm and full of conviction. :whatever:

I give people what I like to call The Seagal Handshake.

That is to say, I try to get someone more qualified to deliver the actual handshake.
