Sad to say, I have come to the conclusion that the political system is so broken that it may be that government is now incapable of being effective.
I would consider myself a social libertarian and in some ways an admirer of the concept of exercising restraint in order to prevent an ever-expanding and bureaucratic central governmental. By the same token, however, I'm not opposed to a certain degree of socialism along with capitalism because that's what we have now; and imo socialization of health care and higher education make sense.
But what I see on both ends of the political spectrum is this: a handful of simple core concepts that are worthwhile get extended to extreme and absurd lengths, and the system of thought becomes a dogma. The primary motivation that drives political parties is to beat the other team at all costs. It's basically equivalent to a sports contest, but in which the stakes is political power. There is then no sober, rational, scientific search for truth and the most viable solution. There is no willingness to compromise (which is by definition essential for government to work). I see that equally on both extreme ends of the spectrum. And those extreme ends run both liberal and conservative parties. The candidates must appease the extreme base of party in order to even get the nomination. Once elected politicians must obey the party machine to continue to serve. They are punished if they buck the party line, and usually won't be back for a second term if they do.
Even more disheartening is the fact that, at least in the U.S., both sides are beholden to the various interests that write the biggest donation checks that are essential to getting elected.
Politicians do little more than posture that they are truly out to help the "little guy." Best I can see, in reality they simply protect big interests to which they are beholden, whether they are politically liberal or conservative.
