To make your own mind up? Could rattle you off a very long list of films that are much better (or worse) than their RT critical consensus says.
I don't understand this current culture of people living or dying by whether or not something gets a positive Rotten Tomatoes score to the point that they let it shape their own opinion of the film in question.
The only way to "make your own mind up" is to see every film that every gets released. Most of us have neither the time nor money nor desire to do so.
People do not let RT shape their opinions of the films. They can make up their own minds about that. I already said I liked Iron Fist and its 18%. What RT is is a tool to help people determine what is and isn't a good investment of their time and money. Something that gets 90% is far more likely to deliver a positive result than something that gets 10%. It is not different than any other site that has aggravate reviews site. If you are ordering something from Amazon and you can get it from one seller with a 90% customer satisfaction rating and one with a 10% customer satisfaction rating, you'd be an idiot to buy it from the latter. It might turn out alright, but why take your chances?
Most of the time, not all of the time, but most of the time, RT has been right. There are many more times I wish I listened to it instead of ignoring it. It would have saved me from wasting my time with seeing total crap like Batman v Superman, The Last Stand, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine in theaters.
