Are you really annoyed by people that don't "get" films??

I find myself very, very frustrated by people who watch a simple film, and the plot completely goes over their heads. It's like their brain switches off. It's like they don't catch on to the completely obvious.

Example. I was looking at the message boards for The Village on imdb. There was this guy asking alot of questions, and I'm just baffled as to how someone can get things so completely wrong. Here are some of his questions. Spoilers for the film The Village by the way.

2) In the end (I’m REALLY not so sure), but I think when Ivy’s father sat down with her to explain some things, he said that it was all farce, that the elders were the ones up to it all. Did this mean that everything those people were fearing, everything about that whole village, was all FAKE???

Yes. Yes!! It was all fake.

4) If the people can NOT leave the village, how on earth was Mr. Walker able to be at the University of Pennsylvania, the place he told the other villagers he taught?

Obviously, he was a teacher in a Uni BEFORE creating the village.

5) Could just a single stab wound really be so infective and be enough to kill Lucius?

Number one, yes of course a single stab wound would be enough. Number two - and the director really couldn't have made this any more obvious unless this were a Jason movie - Noah clearly hesitates, then picks up the knife again, the camera pans away, and CLEARLY Noah is stabbing Lucious repeatidly.

6) *SPOILER*- When we see Noah lying on his side in the ditch AS a CREATURE, just what in the Hell does that mean? Does it mean that Noah was a creature all along, which was the reason for his mental illness? OR was that just a costume-suit he put on? As the old man said, “He found one of the suits we kept under the floorboards.” Also, we see the floorboards torn and the window open. If Noah escaped out of the window as the creature, wouldn’t the village IMMEDIATELY be informed with the bell ringing and the villagers taking shelter underneath the floor basements?

Well, what do you think *******? Again, the director couldn't make it anymore obvious that Noah had found a costume and put it on. How on Earth did this guy get the idea Noah was an actual monster?

People like this irritate me. There are entirely too many people like this. I can't think of any other examples at the minute. I just hate having to explain to people in real life the most simple of plot points.

Can you think of funny examples of people completely misinterpreting films?

I don't mind when people don't get certain details about films. That happens to many people. But it really ticks me off when someone misses the ENTIRE POINT/MESSAGE of the movie.

My mom is like this. I watched Mission Impossible 3 with her one night and she was ****ing clueless.

It's not that ****ing hard to follow. Tom Cruise shoots things and Capote yells at him.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Borat anyone?

Yes, it's a shame that other people can't be as brilliant and astute as all of you forum jockeys.

Oh snap!

Edit: Heh and it's not about being "brilliant", guy.
It's about not having the attention span of a 4 year old, is all

Yeah... I don't mind when people are confused by really complex films. Hell, there are enough movies I don't get either. But when people just can't seem to follow the simplest Hollywood fare, it really annoys me.

I've known people to lose the plot of a film over something as trivial as a character lying about something or when a character is revealed to be someone other than the person he was initially introduced as. And some people I know just CAN'T seem to remember faces. If a character disappears from the film for more than ten minutes they'll be scratching their heads when he comes back and ask "who is this again?", "have we seen him before?", "where did he comes from all of a sudden?"

God forbid a character should be in disguise... They'd be totally lost!

Heh. I love people that say Spider-Man has too much talking.

I used to work in the cinema. I have many tales of idiotic complaints.

One of my favourites is when we had Sin City in. You wouldn't believe the amount of people that came out to complain that there was something wrong with the film. "The colour is all off", "the story is all over the place". Don't people even know what they're going to watch before they watch it? It's intentionally black and white! And the story is intentionally "all over the place".

Who the hell said that? :(

You were talking about people with the attention span of 4 year olds. People that say a film like Spider-Man has too much talking have the attention span of 4 year olds.

Yeah, exactly.

*whoosh*
Right over people's heads...

No, no, I get what you're saying...
I just meant....it sounds like you actually had some kind of contact with them :( :down

Just on message boards and stuff. When a masterpiece of action, comedy, and drama like Spider-Man can't hold peoples attention, what has the world come to?

Seriously though, I think Spider-Man is just really damn great.

When Spider-Man 2 was in the cinema, I worked at the cinema. I love Spider-Man 2 just as much if not more than the first. I'd walk into the cinema to watch bits, and look at the crowd reactions. 9 out of 10 times, the crowd completely failed to laugh at the bits I thought were hilarious. Is it me?? Is there something wrong with me, or are they at fault??

I hate generalizations and I hate sexists, but if I'm honest, I have to say...
I've seen hundreds of films in the theater with scores of different male and female friends.
I'm only friends with intelligent people. I can't truck with idiots in my personal life.
Nonetheless, pretty much as a rule, in my experience, dudes will sit and watch a movie (if they're interested). Then, we'll exit and we'll talk about it.

But with even mega ultra intelligent girlfriends and female friends I've had and have...it is like their brain turns right off when the movie starts.

For instance,...a "mysterious" scene, where a HAND, in a black leather glove, reaches over and cuts the phone line!

Well, the fact that they only showed the hand obviously means that it's a MYSTERY, for now...to tantalize us.
But every.single.chick I've ever known, will see that, and then grab me, and go "WHO IS THAT?!?", "WHY DID HE CUT THE PHONE LINE?!?" "Is that her HUSBAND?!?....or was that the HANDY MAN?!?"

I'm like, "NONE OF US KNOW...'CAUSE THEY DIDN'T REVEAL THE IDENTITY OF THE GUY! THEY JUST SHOWED HIS HAND! AND SINCE NO CHARACTER DID ANY EXPOSITION ABOUT MOTIVATIONS FOR CUTTING THE PHONE LINE, I...GUESS WE'LL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE!"

I've wondered about this before, 'cause I've never had a dude do this (unless of course he went to the bathroom and missed something), but, I'm talking brilliant chicks with masters degrees, suddenly sounding like 3 year olds,

"What was THAT?"...."Whazzat?".....Why did she do THAT?!?"...."I thought he was in LOVE with her! Why is he screwing the blonde girl now?!?"

lol, I don't know why.

EDIT: Also, unrelated...Gammy79, regarding your sig...best part is, that's like, the worst song on Song Remains The Same, lol.
:)

It's you, especially if you are of the mind that if others don't get what you get they are idiots, and from reading above that seems to be the case. Reading other posts in this thread, most of you are of this mind.

It's not that I think they're idiots. I just think it's a shame Raimis brand of humor seems to go over alot of peoples heads.

I totally understand.
To this day, after many many times, I still feel in awe whenever I watch Spiderman 1 and 2 (yeah, I love them both, but like yourself, I think the sequel is a even better), I mean....the action scenes, the jokes, the sad parts, etc.
So no, it's not you, it's them.

I know that, fool :(
I had another version (Knebworth, 1979), but it was removed from youtube, and the one I have right now was the ONLY live version of "Rock and roll" available :cmad:

Well, common sense and poetic license don't always connect, even some of the smartest people I know can miss some, at least to me, obvious things.

Sometimes if the person doesn't gel with the world created in a film, obvious things can be missed.

Not necessarily in all cases.

People who don't get sarcasm ARE idiots.

People who don't get symbolism ARE idiots

People who don't get in-jokes, sub-text and pop culture references are not idiots, but are annoying.

People who don't get, say, M. Night Shameonhim "Twist" endings (which are ineptly telegraphed within the first 15 minutes of each of his movies) ARE idiots.

People who don't get that sometimes realism must be sacrificed for the benefit of story ARE idiots.

People who don't get David Lynch ARE idiots.

etc.

I'm not the fool.
I'm the biggest Zeppelin Zombie on Earth and I was saying, even at their worst, it still counts as "They Rule".
That's why I said, "Best part is..."
