I thought it was steroid use myself until I had read somewhere he was born with a family heart defect. Pretty amazing he was able to overcome it for so long. Hope he recovers well.

Yep, he discussed it in a previous interview how his family has a history of heart defects and his mother specifically. This is the second time he's had heart surgery and the second time it went badly enough they had to go open heart to fix the problem.

Steroids take their toll on the heart. Just look at all the pro wrestlers who have died from heart-related issues. Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior, Roddy Piper, etc...
