Peter Baynham Pens "Arthur" Remake
By Garth Franklin Thursday February 26th 2009 01:22AM

Peter Baynham ("Borat," "Bruno") will pen the remake of Dudley Moore 1981 comedy "Arthur" for Warner Bros. Pictures reports Variety.

The project is being crafted as a vehicle for Russell Brand ("Forgetting Sarah Marshall") as the boozy playboy whose plan to marry into a moneyed family goes awry when he falls in love with a working class gal.

Larry Brezner will produce.

This just in:

The well has run dry.

This is like the third remake announced today, ain't it? For shame.

Jesus.

There are some movies that should be left alone, whose legacy shouldn't be tarnished by a remake that will most likely suck.

"Arthur" is definitely one of those movies. :csad:

This is the worst remake idea I have ever heard. :down

Especially since Arthur is supposed to be lovable.

Since when is Russell Brand lovable?

This just doesn't make sense, who's clamoring for an Arthur remake. Poor Dudley Moore must be spinning in his grave... Wait, is Dudley Moore dead?

i don't like remakes, but I don't have attachments to this. I only pray that the ghost of Dudley Moore haunts Russel brand in his sleep.

Yes, he died in 2002. And good luck to whoever gets to replace John Gielgud (who got an Oscar nomination for the original).

What are they thinking? I find it hard to believe that they can't come up with a character for Russell Brand that he has to star in an completely unnecessary remake of a classic.

I just watched it recently and it is still the funniest movie I've ever seen. There's no need to update it at all.

I'm all for it. The movie is 30 years old and pretty dated.

J/K I doubt it will be as good as The Honeymooners remake...

I hope this doesnt come out on the same day as the rumored Condorman remake, or I'll have to make it a double feature day!

I thought the remake for The Honeymooners is one of the worst remake out there. This one will probably turn out just as awful.

Agreed. Brand is much better at playing the oblivious *****ebag type. Brand as Arthur is not a good fit. Still at least its not Mike Myers. As soon as I saw this thread, I couldn't help but thing..."Really? Wasn't The Love Guru bad enough?" I suppose I'll watch it cause I do like Brand...but his career would be far better served by moving forward with the Forgetting Sarah Marshall spin off.

I'm sorry, but I find Russell Brand hilarious and I dont care who knows it. :o

I've honestly never seen the original, so I didn't think that trailer looked too bad.

As an enormous fanboy for the original, I say "Hurray for the remake!"

I saw the positive effect that Let Me In and True Grit had on the original movies. Every review would mention them, people would become aware of them, rentals went up. (It's still next to impossible to get the original True Grit from Netflix) I'm just sorry that those involved with the original True Grit and Arthur won't really see the benefits....but us fanboys will! :)

Now admittedly, Let Me In and True Grit turned out to be awesome movies and this one may not...but I'm going to give it a chance just in case.
