A few months ago, there was a "consensus" thread on MOS, where it turns out that most of the people who voted found it excellent.

So, now I'm wondering about the other divisive Superman film.

I think it's an underrated movie that is hated by way too many people. It's not perfect - not at all - but it wasn't nearly as awful as most would have you believe. I would've been just fine with a sequel.

I don't think it should've gotten a sequel, to be honest. Not because I have some over the top hatred of it, but because now, looking back in hindsight, it felt like the final movie in a trilogy. I wouldnt have been interested in seeing what would happen after SR, it would be like going back to the Nolanverse after the events of TDKR, IMO.

Totally agree with that.

I don't hate the movie, but it hasn't held up too well for me as an overall movie. I still really love John Ottman's score and a lot of the visuals. This movie had superior flying visuals to MoS, IMO. So there are some individual elements of this movie that I do enjoy quite a bit. And I could even see why there might be a minority out there that still loves it. It's a very romanticized and nostalgic take on the character with a bit of an added melancholic element.

Think I have to vote mediocre though.

Mediocre. It's not a bad movie, it's just meh for the most part. Leaves no impression on me. Bland forgettable performances all around. The story is equally bland.

Mediocre. I really can't feel one way or the other about it. It's not good but it isn't that bad. It just exists really.

I never hated SR and it's actually my third favorite Superman after S:TM and MOS. I think the movie is grade above mediocre, I'd say solid. I think the role of Superman and Lois should've gone to older actors.

I really like it. It plays better as a meditative, contemplative look at a lonely god who comes back to his kingdom (and his love) only to find that they have moved on rather than whiz-bang, turn your brain off, explosions every second Superhero film.

I think it's a well executed film made mediocre by its foundation. I actually liked most of the actors and action scenes, but I can't really say I liked the basic plot, themes, or style at all. What is there is well polished and well coordinated. It's just not as good as it could have been at its core.

I feel like it would've been better received if it had starred an original character. I've always said that SR is a good movie, but not a very good Superman movie.

Terrible. only saw it once and have no desire to ever see it again. The only memorable scene was the airplane rescue. The rest was utterly forgettable.

Boring.

The only good Superman films are Superman The Movie and Man of Steel.

I feel like it was ill-conceived from the ground-up. And so very grey. And yes, I'm literally referring to the color tone of the movie. Overcast skies and muted colors. Yuck.

Same page ! I hated this film the first time I saw it, and have not diminished my loathing for it one iota.

In fact, while Man of Steel wasn't perfect, I still really enjoyed it because it showed that it was possible to make a Superman film that had some cojones !
Superman could be conflicted, but also tough. Also Margot Kidder was a reasonable Lois, Bosworth was terrible but Amy Adams was fantastic.

Anyway, still hate SR, screw you Bryan Singer for making Superman so lame !

I actually envy people who enjoyed SR, because they didn't get the feeling of being monumentally ripped off when having to pay to see it.

Still love it myself, a very good movie that up until the last few years was still in my top 10. After 2012 and 2014 though it's been well pushed out but I still love it as a movie. It was also the movie that got me reading Superman comics.

I want to like Superman Returns, but ultimately find it mediocre.

I've seen Superman Returns twice and I think that will be enough.

Mediocre gets my vote.

There's a lot of goodness in there, but overall it's a little flat,

which is how I feel about a lot of Singer's films, DOFP included, to an extent.

I used to hate it. Ever since MoS, though, I can't remember why. . .

Crap. My girlfriend at the time and I rented it, halfway through the film we were so bored with it we decided to do other things in bed than just watch that piece of crap.

I think it was wrong to pick up the Donner films from after so long. That caused them to cast people who looked like the original actors than getting good talent. And overall, a bit of a disconnect. Right away, Superman returns from what? Where the hell did he go? What is he doing? Not the kind of Superman I think we want.
The performances were straight up bland. And c'mon we all knew that was Clark's son from the very beginning. Meanwhile, Superman just lifts things, it wasn't all that heroic.
Lex has returned because they failed to discover Superman had other villains and what is he doing? REAL ESTATE OF COURSE!

The only plus was Spacey's over-the-top performance as Lex, that's about it.

Kevin Smith described Lex's plot perfectly in one word. "LAND!" Ugh. I still hate this film. I want to see Superman engaged in hand-to-hand combat. MoS is still where it's at for me.

I think it's great, and still better than MOS. :)
