I always wondered why big budget movies like the Batman films done by Burton and Shumacher were all done in the 1.85 ratio as opposed to 2.35 for a much wider action set piece?

And if possible for any film editor to go back to the film negatives and make them 2.35?

The first four Batman movies didn't exactly have the best action scenes. Plus, they were shot on backlots and soundstages so they had to make sure the settings didn't look too fake.

Really that's the sole reason? Because even low budget comedies tend to be filmed at 2.35 which I don't understand.
