At what point does the constant righteous indignation get to be a bit much?

Take the whole lion thing. I mean, yeah, it really sucks because it's a beautiful creature and the guy is a *****ebag, but with the way people are talking on social media, you'd think this lion single-handedly cured AIDS, went back in time to prevent the holocaust AND solved every single crisis facing this country.

And then, even worse are the people going "Oh, you're upset about this thing? Well why aren't you more upset about THIS THING?!"

Outrage and self-righteousness is like a goddamn drug in the 21st century and I'm bored with it.

I dunno Sawyer. You tell me! :argh:

Animals get more love than people.

A lot of people deserve less love than a lot of animals. Even one of those weird hairless cats is more deserving of sympathy than some of the brainless mouthbreathers that populate this here planet.

here comes our psychological self-loathing for our own species, right on cue

Animals get more love than people.
Animals are rarely, if ever, responsible for what we do to them. That people can pay to hunt them shows enough of how barbaric we are to animals. That is before we get into driving animal after animal into extinction.

On the flip side, feels like one too many cops and overzealous gun owners enjoy hunting the most dangerous game.

Oh I don't loathe the species, I think it has fantastic potential. I just wish it would aim a little higher. I'm like a disappointed father watching his child drink paint thinners and running around a circular room trying to find the corner...and then I realize he's 23.

I like how "self-loathing" is a popular term people throw around these days :hehe: What I like even more is using the term "self-loathing" to describe a dislike for something somebody else is doing... It's not the people, it's their behaviour that's the problem. I also don't see what's wrong with critiquing one's own "species", just because I share a genetic blueprint with something it somehow makes us inextricably linked? :funny:

I have no idea what you are talking about

That's quite clear from the lack of insight the majority of your posts exhibit, but I like having exchanges with others where they might learn something.

*snorts another line of gunpowder and gazes stoically at the wall*

If the unnecessary act of an American killing a living piece of Zimbabwean culture for his own selfish fun doesn't bother you than I don't know what to say.

A lot of people who historically got a free pass are now held accountable thanks to "outrage."

But who was lion? Is it a piece from the local folklore?

What does it matter...?

The issue I would hope that most people have with this is that there is a subculture of people that believe their personal gratification ranks higher than another sentient creature's life. Worse still, they use "it is legal" and "society tells me I'm allowed to" as justifications for their behaviour. These are people that if it became legal tomorrow, would hunt other human beings because "I believe I have the right permits". The way permitting behaviour like this unfolds should be more than a little troubling. Extending this logic results in people not requiring their own moral understanding, but whatever arbitrary rules society provides for them.

*compliment.

Nah I meant complement. Your compliment complemented my life. Now, with my life fulfilled, I can finally go on that Penguin-hunting expedition in North Antartica that I've always dreamed of.

I think beneath it is the continual class war. Rich people spending a crap ton of money to kill rare animals, and do it in the lamest way possible. It's happens a lot but this was just a particularly egregious example.

Does it really happen a lot though? I don't know many rich people, or anything about the statistics of rich-people-hunting-cuddly-animals.

There are pictures of Donald Trump's *****e sons doing this kind of stuff. Which is why I look around at the outrage now and wonder why there hasn't been more directed at the Trumps.

I guess we go easy on 'em when they have a loudmouth father who continually pisses people off. Softens the blow.

Yup. "Rich American tourists kill hundreds of lions each year, and it’s all legal"

American tourists -- wealthy ones, given the high costs involved -- account for the majority of lions killed for sport in Africa. A 2011 report by the International Fund for Animal Welfare found that between 1999 and 2008, Americans brought home lion "trophies" -- heads, pelts and whatnot -- representing 64 percent of all African lions killed for sport during that period. And that number is rising: "Of these trophies, the number imported into the U.S. in 2008 was larger than any other year in the decade studied and more than twice the number in 1999," the report found.

I work in a photo lab, and I've seen pictures of elephant hunts too.
