Atlas Shrugged

My main problem with Atlas Shrugged was that it felt more like a thesis than, y'know, an actual book. I'm fine with art being a form of argument and Rand's ideology and points are far from my concern, but it's in the form of her persuasion that the book feels so dead and lacking of any qualities that seperate it as literature than from, say, a lecture.

As for the movie, sign me on. I can't ****ing wait for the midnight double features with The Room or some Roger Corman classic.

I never read Atlas Shrugged and I don't want to for the same reason I don't read War and Peace.

Personally, I was expecting to see something similar to 1984 in appearance, based on what I had heard about it. Then I saw the trailer. I won't judge it until I see it, which I do plan on doing, but I think it's suffering from something I call 'Self Infatuation Ripple Effect Syndrome.'

What S.I.R.E.S. is, according to me, is the ripple-effect that seems to be occurring in films, pictures, books, and other such things. It is most apparent in films due to the two hour visual exposure. This ripple effect is coming all the way from the first people who appeared in film, who mankind began it's self-infatuation with. THEY were the primary focus then because the sets and such were very basic, and it was likely something pretty amazing. How could we not become infatuated with ourselves? It is that aforementioned focus that is causing the films of today to be thrusting the people in them in our faces constantly.

One of the biggest criticisms of movies is... the realism. It is my opinion that a movie would be more real for the viewer IF the surrounding world in the film was the actual star. I mean, nowadays it's almost as if a good deal of these characters on screen are picking a fight with the viewers.

If you see what I'm talking about, great. If not, what exactly is confusing you on this issue I think is a real problem of a certain kind?

I don't think it's a huge problem. If films as a whole were a car this would be the equivalent to a timing belt problem or really gunked up oil filter.

Atlas Shrugged is my favoprite book ever (look at my sig) and I am an objectivist, but I will agree that the film looks bad. Not to mention it's just made from the first third of the book, which makes it pointless. The character John Galt does not show up with the last third and he casts a huge shadow over the movie that you can't avoid.

I keep seeing banner ads for this movie on other websites and ....wow. They need to fire their marketing team because I seriously doubt the guys spent more than five minutes on the ads.

Banner ads? What are they? :cwink: But seriously, I haven't seen banner ads in years since i use AdBlock in Firefox and Ad Muncher otherwise (when I'm using Opera).

Ebert delivers a hilarious review, as usual.

Sorry to bump this thrad but are any of these films worth watching? I have a friend that recomended them.

Being in Australia, the films have not been released here. I was looking forward to eventually seeing them as the trailers looked promising.

However, when I found out that Part II was to be completely recast, and that probably Part III also, it did not seem to be a good option to watching this film(s) as a trilogy. It just would be too hard to re-imagine the characters for three different showings.

I liked them for what they were. TV movie level everything, from acting to effects. The cast totally changes from the first to second movie too. But otherwise, I liked them, but it's based on my favorite book so I cannot really judge.
