Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

If they kill Travis off just as he's started becoming interesting...

i knew that until supporting actors were cast they were not close to filming. for example the last 3 years.

It looks like its starting.

Just saw a tv commercial for The World of Avatar at Disney and you can tell how much passion Cameron has for Avatar with him speaking in it.

It makes me wonder why there seems to be so much online vitriol for the Avatar franchise now?

In a world where every blockbuster film now is a reboot or sequel or remake, is it so wrong that he's so devoted to this original property he's created?

By the time it hits cinemas, the first of James Cameron’s four sequels to “Avatar” will be coming eleven years after the arrival of the first film.
Despite the lengthy gap, Cameron has spent much of the past decade getting these films mapped out and ready for production. Box-office prognosticators have long discussed how the large gap between films will hurt the sequel’s potential, but Cameron tells CNN this week that he’s confident the gap won’t be an issue:
“It was a seven-year gap between The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, seven year gap between Alien and Aliens. It’s gonna be obviously more like a ten year gap between Avatar and Avatar 2. But Avatar 2 you are going to with not the promise, but the certainty of three more films beyond that, and that’s a very different concept with the audience. And a lot of the delay has been around creating that overall vision.”
The recent “Pandora: The World of Avatar” Disneyland attractions have helped bring the franchise back into public consciousness to some extent. Filming on the sequels is finally slated to kick off later this year with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang all set to return.

I think a lot of it comes from the fact that there is very little that is original about Avatar (and, arguably, there is very little substance generally . . . that is to say the original was a hollow shell, bolstered by the gimmick of 3D).

Its like if I made a fantasy world called "central Earth" that included short, fur footed creatures called halflings, miserly, grumpy, bearded "gnomes," and pointed eared, wise "ancient ones," all of whom were warring over a bracelet of power and then said it is an original property.

Avatar is, in essence, Dances With Wolves/Fern Gully combined with Call Me Joe and a few other sci-fi novellas. So the story doesn't really have anything remarkable about it that lasts the test of time.

Further, the effects, the very gimmick upon which it is built, has been far surpassed. So at the end of the day, the question becomes, what is really special about this property? I see very little.

To be fair that is almost every fantasy property to come out since The Rings.

Sure as a story it's telling a story that been told in essence before. However I still give that credit as opposed to the 20th reboot, 80's remake or sequel out there.

It may not be an "original" story but it's an original property which is very lacking these days for big budget features at least.

Not at all. It's just the first Avatar really is just a showcase for advancement in technology, so once people watch it a couple of times, I think it loses impact.. I'm not particularly fond of any character established in the first film. I'm sure many feel the same way, Heck, the lead character should be very easy for me personally to connect to, and yet I really don't get into him all that much.

It is a reboot or a remake, under the guise of being an original property. That is the entire point. Outside of the tech nothing about it is particularly new or well made. The story is flat and the characters are worse in that regard. Outside of them being blue, what do people talk about when it comes to the Avatar characters?

I agree. I dont know if its shills against Cameron creating something positive and earth awareness friendly or that people are becoming down to bone toxic through media, news movies and music thats just consumingly negative.

Basically every sci-fi and fantasy movie is about an average joe in a fish out of water scenario. You do something different, hats off to you.

I think it could just be that the movie is beautiful but has underwelming performances and an okay story. I don't care about Jake Sully and I often try to imagine the film with another actor in there. Hayao Miyazaki's work addresses the environment quite a bit, and yet I find them engaging. Maybe the original Avatar is just missing something for certain people.

Also there is the undertone of him basically turning his back on Terminator and Aliens due to this franchise. Some fanboys feel betrayal, lol.

That's ridiculous if true.

Cameron did what he needed for those series then moved on.

It does go to my point that for some reason people do seem to want Cameron to either revisit an old property or adapt some other existing property.

It's few and far between, but go to Reddit. That's all I gotta say.
