Iron Man 2 Avengers discrepency? (SPOILERS)

Alright. So, at the end of Iron Man 2, Nick Fury tells Stark that he's basically not welcome on the Avengers team, but that he'd like to use him as a consultant. Tony declines to accept this offer.

Yet, at the end of TIH, Stark is "putting together a team". This obviously takes place before the Avengers.

With only Thor and Captain America between IM2 and Avengers, it seems that there's nowhere for us to see Tony win over Nick Fury into letting him into the Avengers...

Possibly, but didn't he decline the offer as a consultant? I've seen the film several times and have yet to fully understand that scene.

Well Favarau mentioned earlier how the films are not technically being released in chronological order.

Obviously based on the campus footage on screen in the SHIELD safehouse at the end of IM2, TIH is either happening around the same timeframe as IM2 OR it has already happened.

Stark confronting Ross at the end of TIH is perfectly in line with his role as a 'consultant' type of role if you ask me. Even though it seemed he initially 'declined' the offer at the end of IM2, perhaps seeing Ross was his first assignment or something he did as a favor to Fury?

I agree with a lot of the possibilities being posted here, but they are and always would be speculation unless we actually saw an explanation on film. And that's what I'm talking about.

With the likelihood of Iron Man not appearing in any more films until the Avengers, how will they be able to explain why he's helping the Avengers in TIH when he wasn't involved at all at the end of IM2?

I noticed it from the get-go...probably because I was really looking for the various references throughout the film.

When the credits were rolling I was telling my friend, "Okay, so we got the Captain America refernce and the Hulk reference...this HAS to be Thor coming up." Haha.

I think Incredible Hulk takes places later. But it's possible the first outbreak has already happened during this movie.

Didn't Tony make some quip, effectively rescinding his decline of the consultant's role, if Fury did him a favor (getting Senator Stern to do the presentation honors for he and Rhodey)? Since Fury obviously came through on the favor, my impression was that the consultancy was a go.

Perhaps I missed this. If this is the case, then that solves the problem.

However, I had thought that Tony said that he declined the consultancy invitation, BUT that Fury could do him a favor instead.

I think Mister J is right...obviously I can't recall it word for word but I believe that Tony did say something along the lines that he would reconisder if Fury did him a favor.

Yeah it's like the "How does Rhodes operate the suit just like that" thing. The movies don't happen in real time. There is a time lapse where things can change. Even if Tony never asked Fury for a favor and just walked, something may have happened that we just didn't know about.

My take on it was totally different. I thought Tony was basically saying, if you want me as a consultant, you're going to have to pay me, and you can't afford that, so basically I'm joining your team for free.

I'll have to watch that part again. I did like it though. got a bunch more personality out of Nick Fury. Not that he was bad in the other SHIELD scenes. I just felt he got to bring in some of those Sam Jackson-isms in the last scene.

Of course, the story of the Avengers film itself can involve how and why Stark actually becomes a member. It can turn out that the Avengers need him to function. I'd also imagine that if the film has any character development at all, a major part of it will be how the team does and does not mesh together.

with Joss Whedon re-writing and directing, Avengers will have character development shooting out it's ass.

One thing I loved about the movie is this movie I feel dispelled that idea people had that IM's box office would lead them to make Stark the prime focus and leader of the Avengers. This film showed exactly WHY Tony cannot lead a team, and it makes me very confident Cap is the main guy in Avengers, as he should be. Marvel gets it.

I am sure Stark will become an official member in Avengers. Remember, he said that Stark was BEGINNING in a consultant role. He never said Stark had no shot to become a member ever. Big difference.
