The Avengers Avengers Initiative, last scene in IM 1

When Nick Fury told Stark about the 'Avengers Initiative' in IM 1, what threat was the world facing at that time?, Loki was still in Asgard... to what was he referring to?,,, your thoughts...

SHIELD might have picked up preliminary information about an alien invasion (Skrull and/or Kree) and just in the initial stages of forming the initiative.

Also,, when Coulson finds Mjonir, he calls, I assume is Fury, and tell him 'Sir, we found it', that means that they already were 'looking for it' or that they somehow knew about the existing of Thor and his hammer??,, what do you think??

Well, there was probably evidence that led Fury and SHIELD to believe that something "big" was coming. So they started racking up heroes.

They will probably explain it in the film. I don't see why they wouldn't.

Is it possible that The Avengers Initiative, and trying to recruit Iron Man, was first put together because of the emergence of the Hulk, and the worry that he might become a threat? We the audience know it's more complicated than that, but from the SHIELD pov of the movieverse, it seems reasonable, doesn't it?

From what we know of the timeline, Banner becomes the Hulk a couple of years before Tony becomes Iron Man. SHIELD was aware of the Hulk as a threat that the Army wasn't able to handle. At the time of IM, I think Banner is supposed to be in hiding, right? In South America?

It kind of makes sense to think that the whole Hulk incident made SHIELD want to assemble a team that could deal with such emerging threats. So once Iron Man emerges on the scene, it would make sense that they'd look at him and think, "okay, yeah, maybe we can get him". And that meshes with the fact that once they've brought Tony on board as a consultant, they send him to inform Ross (who's been dealing with the Hulk "threat") that a team is being assembled -- the implication being that they can take over dealing with Ross's problem.

I'm not saying I think this means The Avengers movie will completely treat Hulk as a bad guy. The incidents in TIH gave SHIELD a lot more data on both the Hulk and Banner. Their thinking regarding him may have changed even before TA starts, and that may be what leads them to try to recruit him for the team (if they can get him to listen). But given what SHIELD knows about the Hulk initially, creating the Avengers to deal with him as a threat would make sense.

The Hulk was already out there and Red Skull's actions in World War 2 were probably well documented. In Iron Man 1 it seems to be the SHIELD is a new agency designed to deal with threats like this though, they didn't even have the anacrynm yet.

I hope they explain that in the Avengers, but if not, no big deal, just wondering.

"It" may have just been that weird thing in the desert that's we've heard chatter about.

shield must know what the red skull knew about norse mythology. they have had the cube for like 70 years and you saw their warehouse of stuff in thor. they have been researching all these artifacts and ancient stories for years. maybe shield was able to see into another realm or alien culture and that is what they fear so they decided to form a team of super heroes.

Clearly this line took place shortly after Stark revealed himself as Iron Man, but before Thor came to Earth, and they found Captain America. So who were the other superheroes he was referring to?

I know this scene was meant as an Easter Egg to fans and no one really thought it through in terms of an actual Avengers movie, so we're probably over-analyzing it.

Clearly this line took place shortly after Stark revealed himself as Iron Man, but before Thor came to Earth, and they found Captain America. So who were the other superheroes he was referring to?

I know this scene was meant as an Easter Egg to fans and no one really thought it through in terms of an actual Avengers movie, so we're probably over-analyzing it.

If there are other superheroes out there, hence, there are Super Villains out there also,, therefore, the need to have a superhero team,, what other super villains??,, up until Iron Man 1, we don't know...

Yeah, I don't see Dr. Strange or Black Panther be willing to join the Avengers at first. Especially BP since he's off ruling Wakanda, but perhaps he'll eventually need the team's help similar to the show.

I seriously doubt we'll SEE Pym or Wanda. Maybe a name drop. They don't even have a final script yet for the Ant-man so they're not going to commit to an actor this early.

As for Hulk, I'm currently embracing the theory that some scenes of The Avengers teaser trailer show a SHIELD assault on The Cabin in the Woods (where Banner was last seen at the end of TIH). In which case I'd bet that the first portion of the movie deals with trying to corral Hulk into joining The Avengers.

He was referencing Banner, not Ant-man. He said his friend was an expert in gamma radiation or something like that.

I think that he was talking about different persons, he mentioned the 'expert in gamma radiation' was never seen before, then he said he was going to email 'someone' he knew from SHIELD, refering to Pym, as you're saying here, but I thought he was refering to Nick Fury...

I always took it that "Avengers Initiative" was the operation of putting the team together, not that there was a global threat at the time.

SHIELD probably knew already of Hulks existence, the stuff Iron man was facing, and who else was still around at the time.

So Fury and SHIELD probably thought it be a good idea to have an almost Superhero SWAT team, so the initiative was to put that team together one by one.
