I never thought that being in a suburban area having chickens would be feasible but I saw a news report that more and more people are taking to raising their own chickens for eggs, meat, pest control for their veggy gardens and fertilizer in backyards and condos. I'm thinking of making a small coop in the spring as I always liked raising chickens and stuff being in the FFA in highschool. Does anyone have chickens? raise chickens? dress chicken in funny outfits? Am i completely insane for wanting to be that much more self reliant and a little less dependent on supermarkets and processed foods?

ugh my husband wants to get guinea foul because they eat ticks. We live right next to the woods and there are many ticks and nasty bugs.

I told him I don't want any guinea foul or chickens because I know I'll be the one to take care of them and I don't want to take care of any more animals.

aww but their such cute tick eating critters

... AND TASTY!

You should probably contact some officials in your town if that type of thing is allowed and if you need any permits or have to get them registered. Also, call some vets and see if they take care of chickens and ask if you should know anything before you do this.

This thread title sounded like some new Milton Bradley game.

Only chickens in my backyard you'd find

I don't think this is the best place to get all your answers about raising chickens, I'm sure a quick google search would give you a much better site to answer those questions.

FFA. Isn't the FAA some sort of airline control? Or do you fly these chickens?

And concerning these foul fowls, they will eat up your garden if they have nothing else to eat:o They stink, they scratch up the ground, and they are very noisy.

when I was 16, we were at a 7/11 next to a Kentucky Fried Chicken, on the edge of a residential area. Someone there had chickens and this scrawny rooster had gotten out of the yard and was running around in the KFC parking lot. We caught it, telling all the people in the drive thru that this place has the FRESHEST Chickens, and took it home and put it in the master bathroom. We put an ad in the paper and three days later a hairy legged hippie lady and her soft bearded commonlaw showed up and took him to their chicken ranch because they needed a stud for their hens

my father in law raises chickens for the eggs and sometimes for the meat. It's definitely the way to go anymore. it's a pretty nice setup because hi neighbors have no clue he has chickens

I killed a suburban chicken with a catapult.

I was young/

Wow, episodes of Seinfeld are coming true.

The FFA is "The Future Farmers of America" basically 4H for Highschoolers, aparently i acidently put FAA hehe whoops. I worked on the school farm raising chickens, chuckers, pheasants, and ducks so i have all the info about raising them in my brains already, and my town is ok to have chickens in res. areas but no roosters unless on farmland but thats ok cuz roosters can be mean and i don't want to have millions of chicks running around lol. Dem eggs fer eatin!

They wouldnt be running rampant around the yard, i have plans to make a coop with a run (on wheels so it dosnt need a permit) for them in a dog run area on my side yard where they can live happily and i can let them out to play and eat the buggys on the plants and stuff but not have free reign to eat up my veggy garden.

Chickens don't stink! well, they stink a little, but thats because they don't make chicken body spray.

Any other chicken owners around here?
