Bally Total Fitness files for bankruptcy

If only musclesforsupes had listened, Bally might still be alive.

Thank god I signed up with 24 Hour Fitness.

Bally's has a reputation for being a "fru-fru gym" where they really cater to cardio machine users and aeorbics bunnies and aren't real friendly towards strength trainers/weight lifters/bodybuilders.

I do more cardio stuff than weight training as I'm kinda on the short side and want to look more lean than built, so I did have a membership from my job...they recently said it's being terminated as of today, so....put two and two together.

Bally's is known as a "Stand-around-to-talk-and-flirt-while-leaning-on-machines-people-actually-want-to-use" kind of gym. I've never walked into a gym with so many people yapping and so few actually working out. Plus, they'll sign anybody up on a pay plan. When I was in the car business I used to joke that the two things you get when you turn 18 is the right to vote and a defaulted Bally's account on your credit report.

You shouldn't have to pay to excersise anyway... It's like health care mang, too much capitalism, not enough humanity these days :o

Health clubs are really only needed during the winter. As some people just dont' want to run outside in the cold, nor do they want to work out at home, as there is too much temptation to just quit after a while.

Well, you don't have to pay to exercise. You can do so in the comfort of your own home or other public places. But if you want the benefits of a private club, then you have to pay ... It's not like healthcare at all - everyone can use regular exercise, but not everyone is going to - there are no "exercise emergencies." On the other hand, people get injured and need to go to the hospital all the time. Who do you think should be paying for a fully staffed and run fitness club?

Government. They should make public gyms like they have public schools where they force us to go sit in a class all day, go to gym, etc. :o

Isn't that what those taxes are for afterall? Not that I'm an expert...

I thinking physical education is just as essential as any other kind of education and should be provided free of charge, but that's just me... hardy har har...

I agree with that very last statement. No, that's not what those taxes are for. Have you ever tried getting a driver's license from the government run DMV? Is that how you want your healthcare process or exercise process to work? Endless lines with lazier than lazy employees and two miles of red tape to get anything accomplished? No thank you. Where in the Constitution or Bill of Rights is it intended that the government mandate, create, organize and run exercise facilities? Or healthcare for that matter? Do you want the government coming into your home and telling you how often you need to exercise or face a fine? That's the most likely result if the government ran it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with privately run exercise facilities. Bally's at one point was a money making machine and failed because of increased competition from other people that created facilities and an atmosphere that was more appealing. That's the benefit of capitalism. New individuals have the opportunity and right to create a new pathway and fill a need. Bally's saw what was happening and had plenty of opportunity to change and grow, but they didn't and therefore they lose. No big deal.

You WILL exercise, comrade! The party demands it! :cmad:

You joke, but it's already like that.

It's not like some kid can elect to not do a gym class. It's forced on them. I'm pro-choice myself, but that's just the way it's been so far in life... I've never had much choice about it... I like gym though so it was no big deal.

Physical education being a part of a school curriculum is different than foisting it upon the American public in adulthood.

I guess that depends on one's individual fitness goals. Not everyone lives in a space big enough to contain the workout equipment they'd like to use, so it has more purpose than just an option for the winter months. As you also stated, most people's home gyms get used as clothes racks as opposed to the intended use. Until recently, I'd always valued the atmosphere of a good gym over the privacy of my own home. The sounds, the people working, that dude in the corner who was bigger than me - all motivation to work harder and show up the next day. Now, my motivation is to spend as much time with Little MakeMineMarvel as much as possible, so I get it done at home.

I prefer working out at home, alone, without distractions or a-holes using equipment to hang their shirt on or as something to lean on while they talk to another lazy a-hole that's not there to work out, apparently. I invested in a good power rack with a cable set up and a ton of freeweights and I'm good to go for working out at home.

hey, I was reading your weight training article, is cool

wish you could spot me, I'm going back in the gym in two weeks

I need to run outside, I can't do treadmills. I need to be getting someplace. When it gets cold, then I do the health club with the inside track or treadmill.
